Chill beach race, nothing mind-blowing but it was a pretty cool race. You’re basically running around a park and a bit along the coastline, very beachy, but the humidity was brutal.

Not a ton of porta-potties at the start but small enough race that it was fine, plus there may have been bathrooms at the huge bar/restaurant The Hangout where it started/finished. Also I don’t think there were many porta-potties along the race route, so go before the race.

This wasn’t a problem for me, but I spoke to someone who ran the full (and got drenched since it rained towards the end of the full) who said a lot of the stations near the end ran out of Gatorade/water, which is brutal.

I liked it, would run again, really cool area, but damn that 97% humidity and 70 degree temps were rough.

Great flat course, the weather was COLD (perfect for me, less so for people who do better in warm weather), solid course through Lincoln and coming back into downtown for the end, great finish line party, good race expo and swag (and really cheap race shirts at the expo, I actually bought a couple extra ones since they had really nice DriFit long sleeves for $5-10), well-run race, minimal hills (also note that it starts at a HS so you get to stay inside after getting bussed over to there, and mostly avoid standing around in the freezing cold).

Solid course, not too hilly, the views of the lake were cool Nothing too surprising here, just a good small-town race. Bib pickup was well-done and essentially at the bus pickup location, which was helpful.

Two things to note, rent a car if you’re flying in for this one, as there’s not a ton of Ubers in the area, and book your hotel early, as they sell-out.

The race is at just over a mile of elevation, but compared to other elevation races I didn’t feel it as much here (thrilled/shocked I stayed under 2 hours despite the elevation).

This is one of the coolest races I’ve done, and seeing hundreds of hot air balloons ascending mid-race was incredible (it’s the only half marathon where I’ve actually stopped mid-race and gone to the shoulder of the road to take a video/photo).

Not too hilly, the difficulty just comes from the elevation.

Bib pickup at Dick’s Sporting Goods was fine (I think it was a bit slower for 5k/10k people but not bad at all), and it was great they give you a 20% off coupon for anything you want to buy there.

Book early, as hotels sell out fast for the balloon festival. Also Ubers can be a bit tough, since there’s so many people going to the balloon festival, but a lot of the uber drivers would rather go to the race start line than the balloon fiesta, so that was helpful.

This is a cool race along the water (and along a street a block from the water) in West Seattle. It wasn’t too hilly, but note that the first 3-4 miles felt like trail running (maybe it’s not an actual trail, but it’s a path you run on gravel rather than paved).

Getting to the race busses was a bit messy, as the bridge to West Seattle was out. Thankfully they posted a detour on the race’s instagram, and I’m guessing this was a one-time thing, but it can’t hurt to leave a bit early to get to the busses for this one.

The big downhill was great for having a fast time, it’s still worth noting that the race is at elevation, and flattens out the last couple miles, so those temper the impact from the downhill, but regardless, this is a fast race. Well-produced and cool afterparty, but go to bag check soon after finishing, as that line eventually got huge. Also be prepared to waddle after this one, as the downhill will do a number on your legs (I was more sore than after just about any other race I’ve done, even though I did fairly well compared to other recent races).

Really cool race, nice solid tour of Madison, loved that it ended a block from a lake by UW-Madison’s campus, but the heat and humidity were brutal, and note that although the race is mostly flat, the mile is brutally hilly (REALLY hilly).

Post-race party was phenomenal, everyone just chilling by the water, bib pickup was low key but smooth, the t-shirt was one of my favorite ones I’ve gotten from a race, and having Bucky Badger at the finish area was really cool (by the water, not by the finish line).

Really cool race, well-run, I’m not sure if the packet pickup was intentionally timed to coincide with the town’s blueberry festival, but it was really cool that it did. Lots of the race is along Lake Superior, which was really cool. One decent uphill and a massive downhill made the course not completely flat, but what did me in was the humidity.

Really cool town to run a race in, and everything is fairly walkable in downtown, the one thing I’d call out for anyone doing this race is THERE ARE ESSENTIALLY NO UBERS/LYFTS FROM THE AIRPORT TO MARQUETTE. The Checkered Cab company is solid, but you have to call to get them to come pick you up, and there won’t be rental cars available at the airport if you don’t call to reserve one in advance. Not a knock on the race, but just something to be aware of for anyone coming in to Marquette to do this race.

Went into this one with high hopes for the race, and although the packet pickup was a mess (how is it a half hour wait to pickup a bib and t-shirt?!?!), it was pretty solid scenic mountains, so I was optimistic. Unless you’re staying right downtown (I was staying ~3 miles outside downtown), pre-order and Uber to get to the shuttle pickup, as my Uber driver mentioned people were saying it was over a 20-minute wait for an Uber (and rental cars were over $400/day when I checked).

I wasn’t sure why there was an hour wait from the last shuttle pickup at 6am until the race start at 7am, but maybe they had cushion in case one of the busses got lost? Other races I’ve done that had shuttles at least kept it fun pre-race (e.g. Vacation Races Grand Teton does a raffle with bib number tickets), but all there was to do here was stand around, use the porta-potties, and watch the sunrise.

The course itself was fine, it’s at altitude (~3,200 feet) but is relatively flat, with some mountain views.

All that said, the thing that drove my 2-star rating down to a 1-star rating was the abhorrent display of political extremism at the race. Lots of people have strong political views, and that’s fine, but for the race to allow there to be a ton of political, non-running-related signs at the race, is disgusting.

Races should be about running (or even walking), and light politics-related humor on signs is great (e.g. “Run Like Elon is Chasing You” at Rock ‘n Roll DC), but when a bunch of signs at the race have nothing to do with running and are solely political protest, it’s not a race I’d recommend that anyone run.

Race had amazing views all the way through and was well-run.

Note that the 6,200 feet of elevation makes any injuries hurt worse (less oxygen to the tissues I guess?), so not a great race to run coming off of injury (oops!), but the views were beyond amazing.

A couple other things to keep in mind, you’ve gotta bring your own water bottle (they give away Nathan cups at the race expo, but honestly having a carried water bottle was a huge lifesaver), and although they have a lot of busses and are good about bussing, you still want to get there early enough to make sure you get on a bus. Also, they actually do a good job of keeping it fun at the race start line while people are getting bussed in, having the race announcer do a raffle (brilliant idea).

Great medal, awesome views (from a golf course) at the finish line, the swag wasn’t anything crazy (cool technical shirt), but I feel like it’s a very sustainability-focused race, so that honestly made sense not to give away a ton of stuff people either won’t use or will throw out.

Really great tour of Fargo, some of the best swag I’ve gotten. They give you a cool fall/spring jacket that says Fargo marathon on it, and a box of “Poop Like A Champion” cereal (which is apparently also available in chocolate, this is the greatest/most ridiculous thing ever).

Well-run race, wasn’t awful getting ubers to the start line and home from the finish line (though leave a bit of time, I feel like the roads in Fargo take longer than you’d expect to get you from point to point).

Flat course, great spectator support, it can get a little warm, but not anything too bad.

Everyone on the flight in and flight home (and at dinner the night before at a random restaurant in town) was running the race, which made for a really cool race atmostphere.

Well-produced small town race.

As someone coming from out-of-state, I had no idea what to expect, but basically Bucyrus is a small town just outside Overland Park, which is a reallly nice suburb of Kansas City–you’re essentially running through roads by farmland/fields, and the rolling hills are pretty much 100-150 feet of elevation climb/drop each mile. Also note it’s decently sunny (I think it was around 60 degrees for most of the race).

The race bib pickup was at a sporting goods store in Overland Park, small and nothing fancy but well-coordinated.

Really cool medal, and the race t-shirt had a cool design.

Super-friendly people, and tons of homemade food that people bring for post-race. Loved the vibes here!

Great swag, incredibly well-produced race. The expo was really solid (though the lines to pay get long, so get there early), the crowd support was beyond amazing (I’ve never seen so many people come out for every part of a race), everything down to the fact that it starts on “Race St” and had perfectly ripe bananas that weren’t dried out from being in a fridge, like most races do, at the end of the race, was perfect.

That being said, the hills by the museum are decently brutal, and running this with an injured knee, I had to walk a few times.

The one and only thing to look out for here is phone reception by the start and finish is a problem, since there’s so many people in one place, so it’s hard contact people you’re trying to meet up with. Other than that, the race is legitimately perfect, and Cincinnati was surprisingly a pretty cool city.

Also note it can be a bit humid (especially on rainy days like this year).

Decently flat race course, with nice views of historical Louisville brownstones and a run past the Louisville Slugger Museum/Factory and the giant baseball bat outside, really cool entrance to Churchill Downs, where they have you go through a tunnel to go under the track and get to the infield, loop around the infield (on a paved track; they don’t actually let you run on the horse track, unsurprisingly), and exit through a different tunnel, then eventually finish by the Ohio River.

It’s a great course and well-produced race, the two things I found to be fairly lame were the SPONSORED CONTENT THAT OVERTAKES YOUR MUSIC IF YOU USE THE RACEJOY APP (they haven’t had this for other races that used RaceJoy, and a massive fuck you to Norton Health for running an add like that to a captive audience of runners), as well as the overall results not being posted until the next day despite the use of the RaceJoy app and chips in the bibs (I could see how I did, but not relative to the rest of the field),

Nothing super-fancy, but beautiful small town, loved that the race started and ended on boardwalk, bib/packet pickup was easy, loved the beer glass at pickup and the Finisher hat at the end, really nice medal, just a really well-done race. The two things to note are this race has a large portion of it on trails rather than roads, and GETTING AN UBER TO THE START LINE IS VERY DIFFICULT, SO PLAN AHEAD TO DRIVE, GET A RIDE, OR LEAVE AN HOUR FOR THE UBER TO GET TO YOU.

Really well-produced race. First 4ish miles went through downtown Philly (Center City) and the start along Benjamin Franklin Pkwy was really cool (flags from all the different countries on either side of the street), solid next 8ish miles through the park, amazing finish with great cheering crowds, ending right at the Rocky steps (and the Philly Art Museum behind it). The humidity was brutal, but the course was really cool and essentially goes on Duval St and along the coast, I just wish it hadn’t been a cup-free race (though a couple water stations thankfully had a few cups). Also the race people screwed up the bathroom lines by splitting one big line into a bunch of lines 10 mins before the race so everyone who’d been waiting and was near the front of the line lost their spot. The course was fine, expo was fairly typical Rock ‘n’ Roll, some small hills but nothing too brutal, some cool views of the desert, the only annoyance was it was a hassle to get off of the ASU campus after the race to get back to my hotel (it wasn’t clear how to leave the campus), as well as the heavy rain during the race.

Nice course, cool scenic view of Charlotte, albeit a bit suburban in many spots, some hills but nothing too bad, it was somewhat humid, well-run race and having the Charlotte Knights stadium open to runners at the end was really cool. Great race to do for you North Carolina half (or full I guess).

Really well-run race, it goes through Honolulu which isn’t necessarily the nicest to look at, but also goes through some incredible spots, and the loop around Diamond Head is amazing (it’s an inactive volcano), but that mile-long uphill fairly late in the race was absolutely brutal. Cool afterparty, well-produced race.

The course was fine, nothing too difficult, expo was fairly small, the race itself honestly felt fairly small, it goes around the city and was cool that it ran by Nissan Stadium and started at their minor league baseball stadium, but nothing too extraordinary. Some small hills but nothing major.

Central Connecticut is boring but the race is cool, goes through downtown Hartford and goes through West Hartford, running near both of West Hartford’s two Whole Foods, which are obviously the most important landmarks in central CT, and going through Elizabeth Park and finishing under the arch in Bushnell Park. Not too hilly, but also not totally flat.
