Step by step all along the 42 kilometers and 195 meters of the Florence Marathon, you are surrounded by centuries of art, history and culture, a unique emotion that can only be experienced by those who run in Florence. Year after year, thousands of sportspeople and enthusiasts from all over the world come to participate in this classic race on the last Sunday in November.
This extraordinary increase in participation also testifies to the constant attention given to the organization of the race. Florence Marathon is now the second Italian marathon (after Rome), and among the 20 most important marathons in the world. The route takes you by all those landmarks of singular beauty that have made Florence famous worldwide: views over the enchanting hills and countryside, and passing right by the Cathedral Square, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio (to mention only just a few of historical importance), before entering the majestic Piazza Duomo. The road is entirely asphalted and ramp-free, except for the short, slightly sloping stretch of road at the start, and these characteristics make it a particularly fast route appreciated by runners.

Beside the gorgeous location the race is pretty average in my opinion.
The organization is fine. It’s a little crowded – human traffic jams here and there.
I’m glad I ran it once, but currently don’t have plans to repeat.

This was a beautiful run. There were aid stations every 5 KM and even until 40 km. Picking up the bib was easy, and the shirt provided is of great quality. The only downside is that right in the center when finishing the race, there were some instances when there were no designated area to run. We were sharing the streets with pedestrians in a very busy street. Many shoppers blocking the way, or had no idea there was a race happening. It was quite annoying to experience, especially for the last 3 KM. Running with slow walking shoppers felt really awkward.

Beautiful city, great course; until you get back into the city near the finish. The longer you take the more the crowds don’t care and begin standing in the street, walking across the course, blocking the view of volunteers that are trying to keep the runners in the right direction. Once you get closer to the finish they cover the cobblestone with blue carpet, don’t get me wrong it’s great aesthetic and exciting until you land in a hole or a moving stone under foot. The weather was cold, wet, freaky windy (at one point it was so windy it knocked over a guard rails and snapped a banner), and rain that was sideways at times (I wished a few times I had carried some arm sleeves or a light wind breaker). Do a little hill training as there are a few over passes and under passes that you’ll go through.
Also, if you are gluten intolerant they have “pound cake” at some of the fuel stations!)

What wonderful sights to see as you run through beautiful Florence. From narrow cobbled streets, dreamy views along the River Arno and truly astounding buildings. Well stocked and frequent refreshments, even cake and tea! Not keen on the landfill sponges that were dished out though. Totally unnecessary. Good crowd support despite the rain (this marathon seems to be well known for rain). Flat, fast and fabulous! Medal a bit of letdown. Good quality but looked a bit like a toilet door sign… Very nice race shirt. Would do it again for sure.
