About Me

  • Race that's calling my name:

    Coast Guard Marathon

  • I run because:

Well, actually I walk. After two knee replacements running is just not comfortable. I have dreams of doing a walk/jog interval someday. I just finished my 25th state! Hoping to finish the remaining 25 in the next 6 – 8 years before I’m 75.  I seem to get slower and slower but still enjoy being outdoors and getting in the miles several times a week.

I enjoyed the variety in this race. From oceanside on a boardwalk, through state parks on trails and neighborhoods on streets. I stayed almost equidistance between the start and finish lines so was able to walk everywhere. It was a cool day; the mylar blanket at the finish line was definitely welcomed. Around the 22 mile mark flags from each state represented in the race are strung across the trail. I was disappointed to see them being taken down as I approached. I am a back of the pack racer so would have appreciated any late incentives. The last two aid stations were unattended; one had a single cup on the table though there were Gatorade bottles in cases on the ground. The last aid station had dozens of filled cups available. This was my 27th state, 31st marathon and I would recommend it for those looking for a marathon in Delaware.

This is probably the most scenic of the 26 marathons I’ve done. The course is hilly and was challenging; some of the downhills were worse than the uphill sections. The course was well marked with plenty of enthusiastic volunteers. They obviously take pride in running a well organized race. Pre-race instructions were clear. No detailed was overlooked.

This was my first overnight race. I wondered in advance if staying awake would be an issue; it was not. A few hills the first half of the race but nothing serious. If you do this and will be on the course at daybreak, 5-ish hours, be prepared for bugs! The race was well organized and the Race Director provided clear instructions. The bus to/from the start was great. The shirt is a nice change from the gray ones I’ve received recently and I love the alien medal. I did not love the OYO Hotel and would probably have stayed at the Holiday Inn or even MGM Grand if I had realized that they were in easy walking distance to catch the bus. Overall, a good experience and I’m glad I did it though I may stick to daylight hours for now.

Mostly flat, mostly scenic course. Started in a pretty neighborhood, wound our way around to the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River. The bus for the early start walkers didn’t show. Ryan, the race director, kept us informed about what was, and wasn’t, happening. We ended up on the same bus as the marathon runners and started about 20 minutes later than planned. The situation was very well handled. All the other busses taking runners to the start showed up. There were a couple of food trucks (quesadillas and ice cream!) at the end. The weather was cool and breezy at the start. Much of the course is shaded which is nice. Hotels are easy walking distance from the finish and the parking lot to get shuttle busses to the start. Friendly volunteers at packet pick-up and along the course. Not a lot of crowd support but more than most trail races. I would definitely recommend this race.

I loved this small city marathon. As a walker I felt welcomed, not just tolerated. Especially appreciated the early start for the velocity challenged. There were changes due to COVID so I can’t really address what the expo would normally be. But the volunteers were great. The race director and his frequent emails were informative and humorous. The course is almost pancake flat with most of it being shaded. This was my 23rd marathon, 4th as a walker after knee replacements. I would recommend this race for runners and walkers alike.
