This is a top-notch half marathon race experience for all these reasons (pre-, during and post-race):
* Good, comprehensive pre-race communication.
* Fast and efficient packet pick-up.
* Easy-to-navigate, mid-size Health and Fitness Expo.
* At least six hotels within a mile walk from the start line.
* Plenty of free race day parking within half a mile walk from the start line — thanks to a new course and start line location in 2021.
* Gear check.
* Orderly start with enthusiastic and motivating host/announcer (who also calls out your name as you cross the finish line).
* Scenic course taking you up close to Kansas City’s most iconic landmarks.
* Plenty of water/aid stations staffed by supportive and friendly volunteers.
* Encouraging and accurate pacers.
* Soft polyester/cotton/rayon blend T-shirt with a neat design that you’ll be proud to wear.
* Efficiently run finish line chute with amble snacks.
* Nice finisher medal.
* Free post-race beer, classic Kansas City BBQ and live music/band at the after festival/party.
* Post-race gong you can ring to celebrate your PR, first-race experience, etc.
* Free high-quality downloadable photos provided within days after the race.
* Live runner tracking and live results.
* And, yes, plenty of hills to contend with…but nothing to hold you back. Just enough to present a challenge. Most challenging is the hill from the Crossroads District up to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
The only potential drawback is that the weather can be cold and sometimes rainy in October in KC. This year, the temperature was perfect — mid-40’s at the start.
One of my favorite half marathons and I plan to run again!

My all-around favorite half marathon of the 32 I’ve run during the past three years. Because it features:
* Best overall runner experience, from packet pick-up to post-race food and festivities.
* Thorough, frequent, informative communication pre-event.
* Energetic and helpful volunteers along the course.
* Huge, six inch by six inch, finisher’s medal.
* Scenic course.
* Supportive host city.
Totally, awesome experience.
I’ll be back!

Of the nearly 30 half marathons I’ve run, Running With The Cows is by far one of my favorites!

And, it’s the absolute best for post-race food. There’s really nothing like the quantity and choices of food for the runners — sandwiches, cheese, cold cuts, lasagna, pasta, cookies, brownies, chocolate milk, Gatorade, and much, much more.

You’ll enjoy the countryside views (and cows) and the rolling hills won’t be too tough.

The whole town gets behind this race and the support and organization is top-notch — including those who direct you where to park, first responders, the volunteers at the water stops and those who cheer the runners at the finish line.

Finally, the finisher medal was so unique — featuring barn doors that swing open. Amazing.

This year, despite some initial drizzling rain, I shaved about three minutes off my previous race time and ran my second fastest half marathon.

Add this to your bucket list and set your sights on your next PR!

Good number of water stations. Great swag for the runners. Great start/finish in festive, hip Des Moines downtown area. Ran my second fastest half yesterday. Super happy.

Ran this race as my first-ever half marathon in 2017 and then ran it again in 2018. Highly recommended! And, a great half marathon and opportunity for anyone outside the Kansas City area who wants to experience the city and participate in a superbly organized event.

Highlights:
* Mostly flat course with welcoming downhill finish — great for helping you achieve your PR.
* Scenic course through some of the most beautiful parts of Kansas City, Missouri.
* USATF-certified.
* Live music on the course to keep you motivated.
* Supportive pacers and all that good, energetic Midwest crowd support.

I especially appreciated the well-organized wave start, live racer tracking, results being available right after you finish, super huge medal, and post-race free, downloadable photos.

KC Running Company does an excellent job with this race and provides a great experience for the runners. And, the race raises funds for a most deserving charity each year!

Oh, and if you are visiting from out of town, be sure to check out any of Kansas City’s famous BBQ restaurants.
