This was my second marathon of the week, having finished the nearby Coastal Delaware marathon the prior weekend. Because of that, I went into the Delaware marathon with the mindset that this is “just another race” where I don’t have high expectations for like I do with my primary A races. This ended up working fine for me, but if are expecting a big budget race, I would look elsewhere. Overall, I thought the race was a very middling, ok event, I’m whelmed by the experience but I would do it again if I wanted to.

Course: The course felt like it was more designed for the half marathon than the marathon. It was essentially split into 2 halves, the first half was ran in city locations, and the second half was ran on an out and back trail. I clocked about 1,100 ft of elevation, a pretty big difference compared to Coastal Delaware’s ~400 ft. About 80% or so of that elevation was in the first half as well. Crowd support was decent in some areas of the first half and on the riverfront, but I recommend you don’t pick this race if it is a must for you. The second half of the race was barren and feels more like they just slapped 13 miles onto the half and called it a day. For my casual run, I was fine, but for someone who is looking to race and PR, I would not pick this race as the monotony and endlessness of the trail will wear on you. If it weren’t for a few other runners I was leapfrogging with, I would probably have thought I went the wrong way.

Travel: Traveling into Wilmington is fairly easy, I drove in from the Turnpike and didn’t experience any delays. Philadelphia is also only about 30 minutes away, which makes this race ideal location and timing wise.

Free Stuff: The race shirt was an Under Armour long sleeve tech shirt, with a basic but very wearable color and design. The marathon medal was good quality and one that I would enjoy showing off.

If you are not particular about having a big marathon packed with spectators at every mile, I strongly recommend this race. This is a race that has a little bit of everything. It covers a wide range of distances including the 5k, 9k (close enough to 10k), half, and full. This is a mid-size race, with about 700 marathoners and 1,400 half marathoners in 2026. I did this race twice, the Tower Challenge (5k+marathon) in 2025, and the marathon in 2026

Course: The course, with the exception of 1 bridge crossing, is very flat and PR friendly. The timing in mid April means that your chances are good of having good weather for running. I believe the temperature for 2026 was in the 40s Fahrenheit. The race has basically every type of environment throughout the course, with the exception of skyscrapers and mountains. You start and end on the boardwalk, then you run into the nearby suburbs before making your way through a state park, and then through a former military base and some more sandy areas by the shore. Then you go through the Lewes suburbs, get some bridge action, and end with a trail run on packed dirt. There are a good amount of spectators and supporters on the boardwalk, near the shore, and by Lewes. The variety of experiences you get in this race is astounding, there’s a good chance you start with a very nice sunrise by the beach. Then you get some burbs, bridges, sand, and dirt to top it off. Post-race/celebration pictures on the beach are also pretty cool to take, I highly recommend!

Free Stuff: You automatically get your name on your bib, which I liked a lot as other runners and spectators I didn’t even know were cheering me on. The shirt is a high quality poly/cotton (I think?) blend, and you get a drinking glass as well. The medals they design are top notch, I have the 2025 and 2026 medals and both are probably a top 5 in my book. They’re huge and have glass-like elements to them

Travel and Lodging: Parking in Rehoboth during the offseason is easy. There is plenty of free parking immediately next to the start and finish line. There are also tons of hotels and other lodging in Rehoboth because it is a beach town. Even if you don’t get the option to stay in the town-proper itself, there’s plenty of hotels on the Coastal Highway only 5-10 minutes away and since parking is so easy, this method isn’t as bad as bigger city marathons.

Food: There’s plenty of good (or at least acceptable) food in Rehoboth and on the Coastal Highway. If you’re specifically looking for premium Italian food pre-race though, I recommend you make a reservation earlier rather than later

Post-Race: The nearby Grotto Pizza is the race’s after party, which is basically an endless buffet of all their food, including some beer if that’s your thing. This is by far the best post-race event I’ve seen, and it’s not even close. Stuff your face with endless pizzas and pastas to your heart’s content!
