A nice race and course. The final few miles are a nice run on a shaded , paved trail of Loantaka Park.
I had not run this race in a few years.
The race is well organized, six pacer groups were offered, local police do a great job with traffic on the main roads and the path out of the woods and to the finish was blocked off (which hadn’t been years ago when I last ran it, allowing spectators to stand in the path, blocking your run as they looked for their runners). Glad to see this change had been made.
It was a warm day for the race and it appeared that they were running out of water for the finishers.
The race finishers’ medal is very nice, and large. When picking up the race bid, the ‘technical’ shirt I received was an orange shirt, more of a t-shirt material than a race technical shirt. There were blue and green shirts in boxes also. I did not get a chance to ask, but figured they may have been for the relay race teams. I saw the green and blue shirts being worn by runners of the full marathon, and they were more of a technical/wicking shirt than the orange one that I received. I didn’t register late either.

My race time would have been better had I not had tried running a pace that I knew I had not trained to maintain for the full distance. I need to be more aware of my limitations and race for what I trained to do.

I ran this race coming off of biking as part of Ironman training, so my perspective should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Either way, here it goes:

    Pros:
-Easy access to start line from parking lot (<1 min walk)
-Really small race, which made for quick porta potty lines and no crowding at the start line
    -Pace groups
-Some shaded areas on the course

    Cons:
-First three miles have hills (especially mile 3), making it hard to PR but easy to negative split
-NOT ENOUGH WATER! I think there was water every 1.75-2 miles or so, but I needed more because of the sun/heat
-Expo was lame (took place at a running store)
    -Medal/shirt was meh

Overall, the race seemed more like an organized training run. It was so small that I was running seemingly by myself for a good chunk of it. The course is very rolling, which made it hard to keep a consistent pace. For those looking to PR, I’d recommend starting slower during the first hilly miles and then ramping up for a strong finish. Wear sunscreen/sunglasses if it’s a sunny day – there are plenty of unshaded parts of the course that can leave you baking in the heat.

Another tip…bring gu/chews if you need them. The course had only water, so you’re on your own for any additional hydration.

Set in northern New Jersey, this race is divided into two distinct stages. The first is a very hilly five mile loop and the second a fairly flat seven-ish mile loop that spends most of its time weaving through a paved bike trail. The theme of the race was fun with most participants dressing up and the miles winding through the park were very pretty. Only knock against this one was the finishing area (or rather, lack of one) which included a self-poured cup of water and an orange but nothing more.

Pros: fun theme, nice course, free photography
    Cons: finish was lacking

Improve the finisher’s area (even some granola bars or something) and this is easily a four-star race.
