The overall experience with the race was great. The ease of bib pickup and expo access created a good start to the weekend. Race morning, everything was easy to find from gear check to your proper corral. On course support was great and everything was well marked. Getting two shirts also puts the swag top tier.

Two negatives – the corrals are waaaay too entirely large. Even with starting near the front of Corral A, I still had to weave through heavy traffic for more than a mile. The other negative was the lack of knowledge that the course was purposefully long and the true finish line was well before what you were to believe was the real one. I understand that they wanted people to still run to the end, but I missed out on my final push for a better time as my last push was after the real, unmarked finish line.

Overall, a great experience.

Difficulty: The name of the race holds true to the associated difficulty. If you’re looking for a testing summer half marathon with heat, humidity, and hills, this is the race for you.

Scenery: Atlanta is not the most scenic city, but the course is designed well to take you by many key highlights such as Millennial Park, a couple stadiums, Georgia Tech, and a very nice paved bike/running trail.

Production: Compared to some of the larger races I have done, this is a more low key race with many high points. While there was no expo, the bib pickup process was seamless and straightforward with many opportunities leading up to the race across Atlanta. The first two mile markers (miles 2 and 4) were each off around a half a mile which had many of us questioning if we took a wrong turn. The race ended up right at 13.1, but I was not sure it would be until I hit the mile 6 marker and it finally aligned with my watch.

Swag: While the shirt is not tech and instead a tri-blend, the medal is outstanding!

Difficulty: As of April 2023, this race is my Marathon PR (overtaking Houston). I went into the race not expecting to PR, but the weather and course set up the perfect opportunity to excel. The toughest part is Gorilla Hill, but the insanely awesome crowd support helped pull me through.

Scenery: While Oklahoma City may not be the most scenic, the course was laid out to where there were no out and backs and therefore you got to truly see different areas for the full 26.2 miles.

Production: The expo, start, course support, finish, medical, were all top notch with some of the nicest humans I have ever encountered. The production alone would make me recommend this race as I can not stress enough how truly friendly everyone was.

Swag: Both the shirt and medal were a bit lack-luster compared to the majority of races I have done. I do not blame them though as the race is to raise money for a good cause and in memory of those lost.

Good production of a decent race, but the double loop on pavers is brutal. If you’re towards the front, you catch the slower 10k racers on the second lap. MORE

It is very apparent why this race is one of the World Majors. It is one of the most difficult, but rewarding courses I have ever run. There is crowd support for nearly all 26.2 miles (minus the extremely difficult bridges) which is rare in most races. While my performance was not near my best, it is by far one of the most memorable and the race that spring-boarded me wanting to run a full marathon in all 50 states.
