The Churchill Half Marathon was the perfect unexpected end to my racing season. It is a historic, well-organized November run with small-town charm and big heart. After being bussed from the finish area to Perrysburg High School, runners enjoyed a warm indoor start complete with a marching band before heading out on a scenic point-to-point course through neighborhoods, river paths, and Metroparks. The chilly weather added some grit, and the uphill finish required every ounce of encouragement, but the strong community support and meaningful fundraising for Food Gatherers made every mile worthwhile. The post-race celebration includes homemade chili, cookies, two beers, live music, and a heated tent. This is definitely a race worth jumping into

The Detroit Free Press Half Marathon was awesome, even in the pouring rain. Running across the Ambassador Bridge at sunrise and through the Windsor Tunnel back into Detroit is an unforgettable experience, and the crowd support never let up despite the weather. The course was flat, fast, and full of energy, and the volunteers and ambassadors were truly next-level. This race tested me, inspired me, and reminded me why I love running. 100% would do it again.

This might be my new favorite race. Flat, fast, beautifully organized, and full of great energy. I even came away with a PR, so maybe I’m biased—but everything about this experience was smooth and runner-friendly.

Packet pickup at the Glass City Convention Center was well-run and efficient. The expo itself was a nice size—big enough to feel exciting without being overwhelming. As a bonus, I was able to test out (and ultimately buy) a new Garmin watch since my old one died the week before. Great timing for Garmin’s inaugural half!

The course is flat, fast, and scenic. The course winds through varied areas so you’re never stuck staring at the same stretch for too long. Crowd support was steady, and the pacers were excellent. The bridge at mile 12 was the biggest mental test, but nothing too intimidating. Weather this year was perfect.

I can’t wait to run this again next year!

This was my first race with Bigfoot Running Company. The event was small and casual compared to larger half marathons—no expo, no road closures, just a simple, well-organized race.

Race morning was smooth with easy parking, fast bib pickup, and no bathroom lines. The course circled Marine Creek Lake on a paved path. Half marathoners ran two out-and-backs, covering half the lake twice.

The swag included a cotton T-shirt and a generic medal that doubled as a bottle opener. Nothing fancy, but it fit the low-key vibe. Despite the rain and mud, it was a well-run event in a peaceful setting.

This probably isn’t the best choice for a first half marathon since there’s little crowd support or race-day energy. But if you’re looking for a no-fuss way to log some miles and earn a medal, it gets the job done.

The Capital City River Run in Lansing, Michigan, is a flat and fast course held each September that delivers everything you’d want in a fall race: perfect temps, scenic views along the River, and quirky trivia signs posted throughout to keep your mind as engaged as your legs. The route offers a mix of downtown energy, leafy riverside trails, and wide, runnable streets, making it ideal for first-timers, PR chasers, or anyone easing back from a training setback. Race production is excellent with clear signage, plentiful aid stations, and upbeat volunteers, creating a smooth experience from start to finish. The finish line energy was celebratory without being overwhelming, complete with music, cheering spectators, and a supportive atmosphere. Swag was top-notch, with a soft, stylish hoodie that remains my favorite piece of race gear and a solid medal worth keeping. Benefitting the Impression 5 Science Center and hosted with Playmakers, this event combines fun, organization, and purpose, making it a must-run for Michigan locals and visitors alike.

The Traverse City Meijer Festival of Races, part of the National Cherry Festival, is everything you’d want in a summer half marathon: perfect July weather, shaded stretches, and stunning views of Grand Traverse Bay paired with small-town charm. The course starts in cherry orchards before transitioning to a path along the bay, where sparkling water, cozy lakefront homes, and cheering neighbors create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. A soft morning fog added a magical touch to the early miles, making the race feel both peaceful and memorable. Race production is thoughtful and smooth, with well-placed aid stations, friendly volunteers, and clear signage that keeps runners confident throughout. My finish time was 2:16, and I found the course to be forgiving and inviting for both first-timers and experienced runners. The finish line in downtown Traverse City was festive with music, cherry-themed treats, and a medal plus a cup of cherries as swag—simple but perfectly on brand.

The Colfax Half Marathon is a flat and approachable course, with the main challenge being Denver’s elevation, which can test runners not used to altitude. The scenery is a highlight, offering a true tour of the city with stretches through the Denver Zoo, past the Cathedral Basilica, Civic Center Park, and along 17th Street, all in typically great May running weather. Race production is strong, with wide roads, well-placed aid stations, and plenty of energy from volunteers and spectators—including local firemen cheering along the way. The swag stands out too, with a quality shirt and solid medal that hold up well over time. Overall, the Colfax Half strikes an excellent balance of scenery, organization, and atmosphere, making it a must-run for both locals and visitors whether you’re chasing a PR or just looking to enjoy 13.1 miles through Denver.
