This is a very easy course at the beach. My family lives in Long Beach, so I am very familiar with the area. It is a quick out and back and the 10K will take you along the beach path. You get a hat instead of a shirt. It is nice to get something other than a shirt, but its a “trucker hat”, so I’ll never wear it. The medal was cute though. The finish line area is great with a lot of good freebies (Lara Bars!). Overall, I enjoyed this race and would do it again. It would great to attempt a PR or as a first race.

I signed my husband and myself up for the Aloha Run 5K in an effort to share the joy of running with him. Being accustomed to mandatory military runs during his years of service, this was his first fun run event. I knew he would be enticed by the Hawaiian theme. I took the opportunity to pull out my Lilo (& Stitch) costume. My husband wore a running shirt he purchased on Maui.

Packet pickup was on Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Huntington Beach from 1 pm – 6 pm. For those not able to attend packet pickup, free race morning packet pickup was available starting at 6 am on Sunday. The 10k started at 7 am. The 5k started at 8 am.

The race started and finished at Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach. Participants were instructed to park in the Pike Outlets Parking Structure (first 2 hours free with validation, $3 an hour after that) or the Aquarium of the Pacific Parking Structure (first 1/2 hour free, $3 for up to 1.5 hours, $6 for up to 2.5 hours, $24 max).

Much to my delight, participants received trucker hats rather than typical boring race shirts. I have way too many race shirts. The ones I like go in my pajama drawer. All other shirts go to the Goodwill. I don’t want or need more race shirts!

Dancers from Halau Hula O Ka’anohiokala, a local hula dance school, provided entertainment before the start of both the 5K & 10K. The stilt walkers were very popular for photos. After the race, Loa Greyson provided musical entertainment.

Food trucks included Dude’s Coffee, Big Boyz Tacos, Salt N Pepper Truck and No Ka ‘Oi Shaved Ice. There were plenty of vendors giving away product samples including Ultima, King’s Hawaiian Bread, Kind Bar, and Harmless Harvest coconut water.

The run itself was just ok. The course was entirely on bike paths and sidewalks, thus narrow. It was difficult to run because many walkers and strollers started near the front. Many walkers also tended to walk in groups down the center rather than off to the side. I have this complaint with many of these type of events.

The volunteers were very enthusiastic about supporting the runners. They loved my costume. The 5K had two water stops and the 10K had four water stops.

The medal was a super cute surfing hula girl with a swiveling skirt. I would participate in this event again only if I am doing it with friends. This is not the type of event that I would normally do on my own. As it stands, if my husband wants to run it again next year, I will do it with him. The medal is cute, after all.

Very well organized and smoothly run. Biggest complaint was with awards. I placed 3rd overall female and got the same medal as those who placed 3rd in their age group. I was told it was because we got a bag but the bag was just stuff being given away by the vendors that you could pick up at their booths. I’ve never been to a race that didn’t give trophies or plaques or prizes of good monetary value for top 3 overall. I would’ve gotten a better medal for being 4th overall because it would’ve been 1st place age group instead of the 3rd place medal I got. Very disappointing. Won’t be returning because of this which is a shame because it was otherwise a great race.

Pros: Easy scenic course. Love the medals and the tote bags! LOVE the community element and a good amount post race snacks were given out. Can’t beat the free packages of King’s Hawaiian bread. Good food for sale from vendors. It was fun wearing a grass skirt and a lei to run in. Lots of people cheering us on the course!!!

Cons: Disorganized. Some of the volunteers didn’t know what was going on. Since I picked a shirt as my freebie and paid 10 dollars extra for my tote bag, they were hesitant to give me my tote bag. No difference in medals for 5/10 k. Why we had to fill out paper waivers at a separate table, I have no idea. Really slowed down bib pick up. And I wish they would not use plastic for the goodie bags!!

The course is fun and flat with plenty of views of the Long Beach Marina and Queen Mary. This is a great race for first time racers as well as the seasoned runner looking to set a PR. While there are no water stations (at least for the 5K), there are plenty of cheer stations which you run through that help boost that power! Who knew that running through a crowd of youth going “wooooooo” totally helps! When I did this run in 2014 (it’s inaugural year), there were several bands playing when you went around for a turn — nice surprise! Overall, the energy on this race is A-mazing. The path is plenty wide (except for when we loop around the dock) and has a nice finishing/welcoming area. For spectators, you can cheer your friends on easily at the start and the finish. The finish line was great with all runners getting a ticket for a post-run sandwich; the vendors there were friendly (coffee; power bars, etc). Not that I run for medals or anything but the finisher medal here was spectacular – sturdy, solid, with glitter and moving parts. How awesome is that!
If you like the words fast, fun, beautiful, cool (weather wise, and style too), Aloha, Hawaii — then check out this race! Offered in 5K and 10K.

Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach is a perfect setting for this Hawaiian themed 5K and 10K. It’s festive and a good one for causal runners and families.
Timing is optional and costs an extra $2.00. Like last year there were a lot of discount codes and internet specials for this run. I used the “Rush49” website to register cheaply.
I parked in the Pike parking lot nearby (I ended up paying $8 for parking). I would advise hitting the public bathrooms on the way there as the lines at the start line were rather long. Shoreline Park is next to the Aquarium of the Pacific and is a beautiful place with scenic views of the Queen Mary in the background. An energetic MC and local high school cheerleaders get you started one wave at a time starting with the 10K runners at 7:30am. I was part of the first wave of 5K’ers and we started at 7:50am.
The run is flat as it winds along the public walking path around the shoreline. There were plenty of volunteers cheering you on and giving high 5’s. Just when you thought there is no water station is shows up at Mile 2. The distance seemed off according to my GPS but ends up being 2.99 miles so it’s pretty close.
You’ve got a pretty good hill to run up to get to the finish but once you pass you get an awesome medal with a Hula Dancer with a grass skirt that moves.
The T-Shirt itself is generic (Just says “Aloha Run” and there is music and samples aplenty after the run.
