I love the Portland Trailblazers, so when I found out about this race I had to go. It’s right in the Rose Quarter with full Blazer pride on display. Free Blazer swag, great t-shirt and everyone gets a fresh cut rose. The course goes over a bridge and into downtown, out and back. I went out a little too fast due to the beginning having a slight decline and the incline coming back made me slow down. I guess I was a too excited. This was one of those races that my family enjoyed staying at and enjoying the atmosphere for some time.
Fun, fast race
This race was a lot of fun with great volunteers. It was well organized, well planned, and pre-race communication was very helpful. Would definitely recommend! MORE

Pros :
-Great atmosphere if you like the boost of racing with a lot of people
-Smoothly organized event, which is impressive considering the size of the crowd
-Great location for the starting area : central Portland, in the big convention center with proper bathroom, dry area, plenty of space for stretching
-Flat course, if not for a slight elevation for a mile in the beginning. Easy to run.
-Great aid
-Free picture at the end! Loved the photobooth idea.
-Great post-run area. Food, drinks, sweet wooden medal
-Great cause!
Cons
-The course could be more scenic, but around Portland I’m afraid you have to chose between flat or scenic, you can’t really have both
-Traffic is handled nicely but there still are quite a few interruptions : we waited more than 3 minutes to let a cargo train pass after the 1st km. They did take the time off my final result, but it’s still a bit frustrating to have to stop. I did the Portland marathon half later in the year, and for a similar itinerary I never had to stop once (though Race For The Roses was overall much better organized)
-Quite expensive. Still, worth it!
Conclusion : An AWESOME first experience, I was still buzzing from the event days after running it! I do recommand warmly
