Pros:
-Flat race
-In downtown Portland
-Musical mile very enjoyable
-Costumes! Fun costumes, creative people, great Halloween vibe!

Cons:
-Do not go if you’re a Halloween grinch.
-The course is not interesting. But on the other hand what matters is you get to see the other competitors in costume, and to me that’s an awesome scenary. Did I mention the costumes?

Conclusion: What’s your excuse for not doing it? It’s seriously awesome if like me you like to see people dressed up (and also like to dress up). Even if you’re not a seasoned runner or are scared of running in costume, there’s a very approachable 5K variation. Just… Just do it! It was so much fun, I loved it and will definitely sign up again.

Pros :
-Epic crowd
-The Expo is just HUGE. It’s pretty cool! A lot of local businesses represented.
-The course is kind of flat, apart from a mile or so in the beginning, but a big descent makes up for it just after. Easy to run!
-No interruption in the course whatsoever, which is impressive since we were running in the city. Traffic handled perfectly
-Super pretty medal
-Wonderful aid and volunteers! It was raining the whole time but they stayed strong and cheerful despite the weather. Very pleased with them! Knowing half of my fee went to their charities and non profit organisation, that’s great.

Cons
-A big one : Due to a mistake in the marking of the course, over half of the participants ran an extra half mile in their marathon ot half marathons. And the organisers took three days to finally aknowledge their responsability and apologize. In the end everything ends well, but it’s still a bad, bad mistake for an event of that importance. Some people missed their qualification for Boston because of it. For me it was simply a disappointment to not have my PR aknowledged at first.
-Same as Race for the Roses, not super scenic. But around Portland you have to chose between scenic and flat.
-Post race really disappointing. Maybe it was mainly because of the rain, no one wanted to stay there very long, it could have been nice to have a dry area to finish.
-I could do without the collectible coin/pendant, I like getting a medal but to me that’s enough. I’d rather not have them and spare a few bucks in the registration fee
-Speaking of the registration fee ! It’s ridiculous.

Overall, I’d say it was a bit of a disappointment, for an event that seemed to be that important. I might register next year if I feel ready to attempt a full marathon. I don’t think I’ll register again for the half, the event seems more tailored for full-marathoners. I do hope they improve marking in the future.

Pros :
-very flat course, easy to do a PR on that race
-very well managed (small) event. The expo is small but sufficient considering the number of participants. Traffic was handled perfectly. Aid and signals were present. Everybody was chill and nice.
-so well managed we started on time! It actually took me by surprise, first time ever that happens
-country music band playing! Lovely touch that fit perfectly the race

Cons :
-Yes it’s flat. It’s also very boring. Nothing to see there, just a road in the middle of nowhere, and it’s not a loop so you’ll have to run it back too. Not recommended if you actually enjoy running.
-No shades anywhere. Don’t be like me, bring a cap and/or sun glasses or you’ll squint half of the race
-I get extremely angry when I get a necklace instead of a medal at the end of a women’s race. It’s not like any of us is going to wear a cheap necklace and it undermines the effort we put in the race. To me it’s plain sexist.

Conclusion : Not a very fun course but great if you’re going for a personal best.

Pros :
-Great atmosphere if you like the boost of racing with a lot of people
-Smoothly organized event, which is impressive considering the size of the crowd
-Great location for the starting area : central Portland, in the big convention center with proper bathroom, dry area, plenty of space for stretching
-Flat course, if not for a slight elevation for a mile in the beginning. Easy to run.
-Great aid
-Free picture at the end! Loved the photobooth idea.
-Great post-run area. Food, drinks, sweet wooden medal
-Great cause!

Cons
-The course could be more scenic, but around Portland I’m afraid you have to chose between flat or scenic, you can’t really have both
-Traffic is handled nicely but there still are quite a few interruptions : we waited more than 3 minutes to let a cargo train pass after the 1st km. They did take the time off my final result, but it’s still a bit frustrating to have to stop. I did the Portland marathon half later in the year, and for a similar itinerary I never had to stop once (though Race For The Roses was overall much better organized)
-Quite expensive. Still, worth it!

Conclusion : An AWESOME first experience, I was still buzzing from the event days after running it! I do recommand warmly
