Drake does a spectacular job running the Drake Relaying and hosting a road race for anyone to participate in no matter how fast or slow you run/walk! What I love most about the road race is that the race coordinators makes you feel like you are a athlete in the Drake Relays. This year I competed in the 10k rather than the half and the one thing I disliked was running into the 5k for the last 1.5 miles, I had to zig-zag through participants walking or running at a slower pace.
Overall I absolutely love this race and plan to come back in the following years!

I had trained for about a year for this marathon not knowing what to expect. I was blowing this race away running with the 7:10/mile pace group (which was an amazing group) up to mile 18, ran two more miles and then strained my ACL. As I sat on the side of the trail a support biker rolled up and asked if I was okay and encouraged me to finish the last 6 miles. I walked those last 6 miles and at mile 25 that support biker caught back up with me and encouraged me to finish the race no matter what, so I finished it running. After I finished the same dude came up to me, told me great job and that it would be a moment I would remember forever.

To this day I still remember every moment of that race and that gentlemen that encouraged me throughout the hardest part of the race! Absolutely love the Iowa hospitality and support at their races!

This is by far the most interesting race I have ever competed in. The swim is in the ocean, and everything else is on the beach! I think the only down falls of this race would have been the wind and tide-pools in the hard sand.
Everyone at this competition is friendly and encouraging to all participants no matter what experience they have. It is defiantly a mixed environment of fun, friendly, and competitive.

For those who are in it for the competition have the opportunity to win a coconut trophy (see picture attached) which I think is the coolest thing ever.

The Drake Relays committee does an amazing job organizing this race along side the Relays. My favorite part of this race is how I can get involved at a large competition while not being in athletics anymore, and then later go watch the competition.

Starting out the Des Moines Marathon was a great event. The race team does an magnificent job hosting the event in Des Moines, Iowa. The check-in was very easy to understand along with the fact that they keep you updated with emails up to the event and even send you your race number. Race bags had some little goodies inside, which were great. Race day was very smooth but traffic was really congested in the downtown area.
It was very easy to find the pace section I desired and I wasn’t shoulder to shoulder to everyone towards the front of the start line. Throughout the race it felt to me as though there was never a dull moment, with spectators almost everywhere along the course. Also you may never believe it but they also had live music placed though tout the entire course. The half marathon course as a whole is very well put together and for the most part flat until about mile 9 or 10 where there is a hill, noting bad or enormous. It was nice having the finish line right where we had started. Post race food was amazing with many different options available from multiple venders. After the race and food I left, didn’t experience much of the post race.
This was my third half marathon and slowest by far but yet still a race I plan on participating in if I’m in Iowa.
