Modesto Marathon ๐
Modesto Marathon โ A Hidden PR Gem
Modesto Marathon ๐
If you are tired of the chaotic, "big-city" marathon experience and want a race where you can actually hear your own breath and focus on your splits, the Modesto Marathon … MORE
If you are tired of the chaotic, “big-city” marathon experience and want a race where you can actually hear your own breath and focus on your splits, the Modesto Marathon is a breath of fresh air. I returned this year after running the half marathon three years ago, and once again, it did not disappoint.
The Atmosphere: Quiet, Focused, and Different
This is a medium-sized race with a vibe that is completely different from the “big and busy” majors. Itโs calm, well-organized, and intimate. One of the most unique aspects of this course is the runner density. After the half marathon and full marathon courses split, the crowd thins out significantly. At times, it was just me and one other runner. While some might find that daunting, I loved itโit forces you to lock in and focus entirely on your steps and your rhythm.
The Course: Built for Speed
For anyone hunting for a PR, this course is a dream.
Terrain: It is incredibly flat and well-maintained. The roads are wide and mostly straight with very few curves to break your momentum.
Elevation: According to my Garmin 255, the total elevation gain was only 116m.
The Bridge: There is only one bridge on the course, which you cross twice (out and back). Aside from that, itโs smooth sailing.
Support and Amenities
The people on the course were incredibly helpful and kind. Despite the rising temperatures, the volunteer support was top-notch. A huge shout-out for handing out ice towelsโthat was a total game-changer given the heat and shows that the organizers really prioritize runner safety and comfort.
The Swag: Premium Gear
The race swag this year was genuinely impressive and far better than most races I’ve entered. Instead of the standard cheap giveaway, they included a professional jacket that is both waterproof and breathableโit’s actually functional gear youโll use. The race shirt is also high quality. Itโs clear they didnโt cut corners on the runner experience.
Final Verdict
I highly recommend this race. Whether you are a local or looking for a “hidden gem” destination race to hit a personal best, Modesto is a fantastic choice. Itโs a fast, professional, and friendly event that Iโd gladly run again.
A Note for the Organizers (Suggestion)
The only minor hiccup was the pacer distribution. The website mentioned there would be a pacer team for BQ (Boston Qualifying) times, but I didn’t see pacers for the 3:00, 3:05, or 3:15 slots on the course.
I completely understand that for a race of this size, there might not be huge groups for those specific goal times. However, it would be very helpful if the website explicitly listed which specific time slots will have pacers so runners can plan their strategy accordingly.

I love this small to medium sized, country-vibe race. Not too crowded, not over hyped. The course is absolute beautiful – most of the time, we have vineyard on our side, and some time we also have river flowing along with us. The temperature is around 65F, 30%-ish of the course is shaded, so very suitable for the run.
I arrived 1 and a half hour before my race. So I can just park maybe 100m before the start. And I picked up my bib on race day morning, then I took a nap, fueled myself and walked to the starting line, its very convenient.
The course is very flat, my race is 30k, I only remember one uphill that lasts about 30 meters, that’s it. One thing to note is that part of the course, about 3 kms, we need to run on the road shoulder, and the road is not closed to either direction.
Registration fee is around $90 for both 30K and half marathon. Very reasonable.
I’d like to compare this race to Napa Valley, both are picturesque, and fast. And this race is much less known.
Also there are very few 30k races, so I absolute recommend this race for marathon training, etc.

This race is well organized, from bib picking up, race course support to post race event.
The weather was ideal at around 11C, and it slowly crept up to 16-17 at around 10:00 am. And to my delight, most of the time (60%+) I was running in the shade.
This year, there are at least two high schooler’s cheerleading on the course, this is something I do not see on other race courses. This is lovely and inspiring.

Course is absolute fantastic – scenic along the road, only a few turns, mostly straight line course. There are a few notable rolling hills but are mild, and whenever there is a uphill, there is a downhill, so you get back time in the downhill immediately after you lost it due to uphill. The net elevation gain is about negative 15 meters. This makes the course a very fast one.
The race start on 7:00:00 am sharp. We took the shuttle in Justin high at around 5:30 am, and the shuttle dropped us about 1/2 miles from the start line, the gear check place is around 1/4 miles from the start line.
After finishing our race, we have to walk back to Justin High to get our car, which was a 1.1 mile walk, not an easy thing after an all out race, I hope the organizer can have some shuttle or alike.
The shirt is a fantastic long sleeve tech shirt, most impressive thing is that it does NOT have those brand names on the back (the back was totally blank). This is the best race shirt I have got over the past two years.
Overall very satisfied.

I believe this would be a great race if it had not been the headwind and rain.
The first half was ok with not-too-tough rolling slopes, manageable, and it also added fun to the race. However, when it hit the coast road, we met with very strong headwind PLUS upslope, it was terrible, and my pace dropped out of 5:00/km. Also it was raining at that time, so all and all this greatly reduced my speed.
Overall, if it were not for the wind (I heard it is common at this time of the year to have strong wind along the coast) and rain, this would be a great experience.

Also like the size of the match, it is small sized, 2024 there are ~ 800 half marathoners. I ran most of the time with the 1:30 pace cohort of only 6 runners.
In 2024 race, the weather is perfect: <10kmh wind, ~10C weather, overcast.
Most of all, the race is well organized, the t-shirt and the medal are of very high quality (they even include a medal hanger!). After race event / food is good. And photos are free!!!! A big big plus.
I pr’ed this time and I love this race.
