Runners have the privilege of starting on the land of the Blackfeet Nation before ascending into the mountains of Glacier National Park. The views are unparalleled and this course is incredibly challenging—the first 8 miles are uphill. The camping option, the shirt, and the medal are great; the staff and volunteers are fantastic. Highly recommend this race!

I live in Calgary, so it makes me sad to give this race a mediocre review. The course is a beautiful tour of downtown and inner southwest Calgary for the first 30km, then it becomes a hellish slog along Memorial Drive for the next 10km. Despite the road following the picturesque Bow River, there’s NO tree cover on the asphalt of the road. A sunny and hot day like 2016 meant a a great race turned into a tough day. Crowd support is quite weak and the number of porta potties seemed to be inadequate. Somehow, I earned a personal best at this race, but it didn’t feel like it (probably because I vomited right after finishing). The theme of the 2016 race was “superheroes,” leading to literally cartoon-inspired medal and shirt. That was a disappointing end to a disappointing race.

Chicago (the race) is HUGE, so you will be in a crowd for about 25 miles. As a result, there’s not a lot of room for maneuvering. Crowd support is the best I’ve ever seen, with people along every inch of this fantastic, flat course. You get to see the 29 neighbourhoods of Chicago and feel that Midwestern welcome. Run this race—you won’t regret it.

Vancouver is beautiful, well-organized, and the weather was fantastic. Great energy, swag, aid stations. It should have been perfect. Instead, I chased the pacer (a 10:1 pacer from the Running Room) for 16km and blew up spectacularly.
