Set in northern New Jersey, this race is divided into two distinct stages. The first is a very hilly five mile loop and the second a fairly flat seven-ish mile loop that spends most of its time weaving through a paved bike trail. The theme of the race was fun with most participants dressing up and the miles winding through the park were very pretty. Only knock against this one was the finishing area (or rather, lack of one) which included a self-poured cup of water and an orange but nothing more.
Pros: fun theme, nice course, free photography
Cons: finish was lacking
Improve the finisher’s area (even some granola bars or something) and this is easily a four-star race.

Looping three mile paved trail through thick forests and along the shores of a bay. This was one of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever ran … err … walked. Lots of small, rolling hills that would have been fun to attempt had my shins not been absolutely killing me by the end of this series. I think this would’ve been my favorite course of the series had I been able to fully tackle it. As usual, the New England Challenge crew was well organized and amazing!
Nutmeg State Marathon (New England Challenge)

A medium looping course around a golf course, this one is mainly pavement with a little single track trail added in. One massive downhill at the start and another massive uphill towards the end of each loop. Easy to locate in the middle of Hartford. Highly recommend this one.

The New England Challenge is well-organized and well-run. I have nothing but respect for the group and hope to run it again in the future. With that said, this course was nothing special. Flat, paved, easy run with very short loops made for a bit of monotony. The Japanese Garden in the middle was pretty but the rest of the course was parking lots and pothole-filled sidewalks. It makes sense logistically for the series and the other five courses more than make up for it, but this course isn’t a big draw for me.
Maple Leaf Marathon (New England Challenge)

This course has a number of very large, difficult hills and is a bit technical in parts. It was an enjoyable experience overall and great for a good challenge. The scenery was very pretty. Starting in the morning, we were able to watch the fog lift over the lake. Course was mixture of dirt and crushed limestone.
Granite State Marathon (New England Challenge)

This was probably the highlight of the New England Challenge series for me. The course was two long loops on a beautiful trail with views of rivers and lakes. Not really technical at all but some solid, small hills here and there. Highly recommend. This and Vermont were my two favorites on this series.

I decided I was crazy enough to try an ultra and at the recommendation of many friends, decided to run the 50 Miler at Hennepin. The course was easy (if that is possible for 50 miles) … flat and a well-maintained trail along a canal. The scenery was pretty but did get a bit monotonous (we’re talking 50 miles here). The support crews were awesome and enthusiastic throughout, as is their reputation. Race Director did an amazing job. Would definitely do this one again (planning to come back potentially as early as 2020) and a great course for a first ultra.
