RaceRaves Summary:

Bayshore was a fun, scenic, and very memorable race weekend for our family. My wife, son, and I all raced, and I came away with a new PR. The course was mostly flat aside from an early hill near the start, with beautiful stretches through lakefront cottage areas and plenty of crowd support. Weather was ideal for racing — 55°F, cloudy, with intermittent rain/drizzle.

Logistics were smooth, especially packet pickup, and we were lucky to have a half-marathon parking pass so we could wait in a warm car at the start instead of taking the early shuttle. The course was well marked, and the post-race atmosphere was fun. The Moomers line was too long for us, but we still enjoyed the finish area with bananas and hop water. Overall, a well-run, enjoyable race that I’d definitely recommend.

The Marine Corps Historic Half was one of the best-organized races I have ever run. Not surprisingly, the Marines did an outstanding job from start to finish. The event had a very professional, well-run feel without becoming overwhelming or overly complicated.

The course itself is challenging, especially with the late climb, so I would not necessarily describe this as an easy PR course. But as a race experience, it was excellent. The size of the race was a major positive for me: big enough to feel like a meaningful event, but not so large that it required multiple corrals or a long, drawn-out start. I really enjoyed that everyone could start together, which made the morning feel simple and efficient.

The pre-race expo was a little light compared with some larger races, but that was a minor drawback. One of the highlights of the weekend was the opportunity to visit Quantico and the National Museum of the Marine Corps, which was excellent and added a lot to the overall experience.

Overall, this was a tough but memorable race with outstanding organization, strong military/community atmosphere, and great logistics. I would highly recommend it to runners looking for a well-executed medium-sized half marathon with a meaningful setting and a challenging course.

Cowtown delivers a very well-organized and energetic race experience from start to finish.

Bib pickup on Saturday was smooth and efficient. The layout was clear, volunteers were helpful, and the expo had a wide range of vendors and gear options. It felt lively and exciting without being overcrowded.

Race morning was impressively organized. Corrals moved out quickly and efficiently — as a Group 4 runner, we were on the course before 7:15 a.m. The staging area felt controlled and professional, and the overall flow to the start line was seamless.

On the course, signage and direction were very well done. Aid stations were staffed and consistent, and the race felt polished throughout. The post-race party was also well executed — comparable to larger, professionally managed events I’ve done in the past.

From a performance standpoint, I finished in 2:12 on an overcast, breezy morning in the low 60s — nearly ideal running conditions. I felt strong and controlled through the first half of the race. There are some meaningful hills on this course, and I made a strategic decision to manage effort on one of the larger climbs to avoid redlining too early. The later miles became challenging, as they often do in a half marathon, but overall it was a steady and well-managed effort. The course definitely rewards smart pacing.

The only logistical challenge we encountered was post-race transportation. Because of road closures, access to pickup areas was limited. We ultimately had to walk about a mile away from the arena to secure an Uber. It’s understandable given the course layout, but something future runners may want to plan ahead for.

Overall, Cowtown offers strong organization, solid on-course support, and a fun race atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a well-run half marathon with a bit of honest terrain mixed in.

Overall impression: A stunning, challenging race set in one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever run — but with some organizational hiccups that matter, especially for road runners.

Packet pickup:
Packet pickup was smooth and well organized. No complaints here — efficient, easy, and a good start to race weekend.

Race morning logistics:
Race morning, unfortunately, was chaotic. The PA system couldn’t be heard where most runners were gathered, which left many of us unsure where to line up or what was happening. For a race of this size, clearer communication and signage would go a long way toward reducing stress at the start.

The course:
Simply put: jaw-dropping. The scenery is unreal — red rocks, wide-open views, and a true Sedona experience from start to finish. That said, this course is very hilly and should not be underestimated. The elevation changes are constant and cumulative, and they take a real toll late in the race. My calves began cramping around mile 12, which speaks to just how demanding the final miles are.

Aid stations:
This is a no-cup course, which I personally didn’t love — but I was glad I carried a 500 ml bottle, because it was absolutely necessary. Aid stations were well stocked, but the food offerings felt more like what you’d expect at a trail race than a road half marathon. Seeing things like PB&J sandwiches around mile 8 — right before a major climb — was a strange choice. Most runners at that point are looking for simple carbs, not something heavy.

Timing & results:
One major frustration: results were posted using gun time, not chip time. Given the disorganized start and difficulty hearing announcements, this feels unfair — especially for runners who were forced to start farther back than intended. Chip time should be standard for an event like this.

Post-race & expo:
The post-race area had a great atmosphere. The expo and finish area felt relaxed and celebratory, with a nice vibe for runners to hang out, refuel, and enjoy the surroundings after finishing.

Final thoughts:
RunSedona delivers an unforgettable visual experience and a legitimately tough course. If you’re looking for a scenic, challenging race and are willing to sacrifice PR potential, it’s absolutely worth doing. That said, clearer race-morning communication, chip-time results, and more road-runner-appropriate aid station offerings would elevate this race from great to exceptional.

Who this race is for:
Runners who value scenery, challenge, and experience over time goals.

Who it’s not for:
Anyone chasing a PR or expecting a fast, traditional road half marathon.

I really enjoyed running this race—it truly felt like a big-time event. The morning MC did a great job getting everyone fired up, and the start heading out toward Miami Beach alongside the cruise ships was pretty incredible. Running past PortMiami at sunrise felt uniquely “Miami” in the best way.

The out-and-back along Ocean Drive was even better on the return into downtown—great energy, great views, and one of those moments that reminds you why you sign up for races like this.

Performance-wise, the heat was the real variable. While most of the Midwest was shut down under snow and ice, I was in Miami learning (again) that pacing plans don’t negotiate with humidity. I had to downshift, manage effort, and focus on finishing strong rather than forcing a number that just wasn’t there on the day. Not flashy, but smart.

All in all, a fantastic experience—well organized, scenic, and absolutely worth it. I’ll take adapting to the heat over dodging black ice any day—and I’m leaving Miami knowing I raced it the right way.

The organization was really well done. You really didn’t have to wait in line for anything. The course was well stocked with spectators cheering you on along the route. I probably dressed a little warmer than I needed to and would’ve done with one less layer set my new PR on what is a pretty hilly course.

Good
-Check in process was easy, there were plenty of opportunities to pick up your kit the week of at multiple locations.
-The atmosphere downtown was really fun in front of the rock hall. There were multiple sites where bands were set up along the route playing which made it fun as well.
-Plenty of water stations along the route
-the pacer at 9:30 was awesome, really encouraging
Bad
-The selected routes left traffic open, and the police officers were regularly stopping racers to allow traffic through. I’ve never experienced this.
-previous years those running the half got a sweatshirt. This year everyone got the same crappy T-shirt.

Rock ’n’ Roll Nashville was a very well-run, high-energy event with a challenging course and strong race-day organization. The course was clearly marked, volunteers were everywhere, and the overall production felt very professional — similar to the larger Life Time events I’ve run.

The course itself is tough. Nashville is not a flat race, and the hills come early and often. The opening mile gives you some downhill, but then the course starts climbing and rolling. There’s another major section of climbing in the middle, and even the later miles have enough rollers to keep things difficult when your legs are already tired. It’s a great race if you want atmosphere and a memorable city course, but I would not call it an easy PR course.

Aid stations were generally good, though later in the race I noticed a few seemed to be running a little behind getting water cups filled and handed out. It wasn’t a major issue, but it was noticeable when runners were tired and really needed fluids quickly.

The finish area and after-race party had a lot going on and felt like a big-event festival, though I didn’t get to spend much time there because I had to get back to my hotel, shower, and head to the airport. The event merchandise looked good, but it was definitely on the pricey side.

Overall, I thought Rock ’n’ Roll Nashville delivered exactly what you would expect from a large destination race: strong organization, lots of energy, good volunteer support, and a memorable but demanding course. I’m glad I ran it and would recommend it more as a fun race experience than as a PR attempt.
