I figured since I had run a marathon a month ago that I wouldn’t have to specifically train for this race. Whew! This was hot, humid, hilly, and had some technical spots where it got very rocky. It was one of my worst times and even the best runners finished the half marathon close to 2 hours. It was brutal and I was miserable for much of it. Of course, as the crazy runner I am, I would consider doing it again.

There is a super sweet festival surrounding it and people could take advantage of the campground and swimming hole after the race. Due to time constraints I cannot speak much about this part but I think that if you have the time and opportunity that this part of the festivities is really fun.

Swag was a shirt that you could exchange for a hat if you chose. Since I have plenty of shirts I opted for a technical trucker by boco.

So yeah, don’t expect a PR. But if you are into races that are challenging but beautiful and well run, this is one for you.

I felt like I was crashing a local race in a town where everyone knows each other. The crowd support was one of the best I have seen especially for such a small sized race. There is a competition for best water stop and they really all go all out. People will line the hills dressed up like cat in the hat or wizard of oz characters and cheer you on whether you are walking or running. Don’t expect a moment of flats though. You are either running up or down the whole time. I was not trained for the hills and I felt them each time I approached a new one. Swag was a soft cotton shirt, finisher medal, and some socks that I believe are made in Hickory. I always like when I get a surprise item like socks. Overall difficult but fun course. You will never be lonely even if running alone.

This was a small race that seemed to attract runners from all over. Despite having fewer than 150 finishers they did provide pacers. The course has a steady downhill grade. Because of desert hypnosis you will sometimes feel like you are running uphill when you really aren’t. The course isn’t exciting but it is a good place to set a PR with its gentle downhill slope. The course is mainly on a highway but there were no issues with cars. It just got a bit boring looking at the desert for hours. It is Arizona in December which gets warm and dry once the sun comes up. Drink way more water and Gatorade than you think you need. I could have done much better had I known that. It is also a Boston qualifier for those capable of that. There wasn’t much crowd support to the point that I saw the same spectators 3 times and recognized them. You ride a bus back to the start line after completing the race. And you are riding for almost the full distance as the course is nearly a straight shot down the highway. The town of Buckeye generally has no idea that there is even a marathon in their town. At a restaurant bar the night before I mentioned to locals that I was running the Buckeye marathon the next day. None of them knew about it, but they also asked me if it was a 5 mile marathon. I met a lot of great people at the race and the race shirt is my new favorite running shirt.
