The Winterläufe is the first in a series of three races held throughout the year in Frankenmuth. Finishers of all three in a calendar year earn a special medal. I found the winter edition to be very well-organized. As can be expected, the Michigan weather is a wildcard. Just two days before the 2019 edition, a polar vortex had temps plummeting to -25°F, but by race morning it was a balmy 25° above zero with plenty of snow on the ground. All in all, it was a very fun event.

Quite a few people turned out for this winter race (“winterläufe” in German) on a cold day in 2017. Part of the route is on a gravel road, and when snow/ice were in play it made for difficult footing. The course was an out/back route going over a historic bridge not open anymore to vehicles. The scenery was very nice, assuming you don’t mind the cold!
