This is a trail race at a vineyard produced by Rhode Races. They produce two of these wine runs that take place in the afternoon near the MA/RI border. I was on-call so an afternoon race was perfect and I was happy this one was in MA because of the tri-state challenge the 50 state half marathon club is holding this year (you need to run a certain number of miles in 3 states of your choice and my states are NH, MA and NY). The race was pretty much exactly the same as last year. It was so hot this year. It was a bit hot last year but this year was pretty brutal. Between the heat and my still not completely resolved GI issues I knew this was gonna be a slow race. There was good pre race communication, east parking, east directions where to go and easy bib pick-up. Packet included bib and T-shirt. The race started on time. It is manually timed. The course is nice. It is trail and the surfaces are not super even but it’s a fairly easy trail run. You have to be careful but you don’t need trail training. The scenery is really pretty through the vines and farmland. It is well marked and there are mile markers. There is a nice start/finish arch. My goal was under 45 minutes which I did make. You get a wine glass at the end instead of a medal. There is a BBQ at the end but vegetarian options are poor just salad, coleslaw and watermelon but at least they were helpful and knowledgeable that everything else including the baked beans were not vegetarian. Always the worst when you ask if something is vegetarian and someone is like I think it is so you eat it and you learn the hard way it isn’t (today was not the day for the lesson). There is also wine tasting but I don’t drink alcohol and also would not drink on call. Overall this is a fun race and I would do these races anytime I was looking for a somewhat local race in the afternoon but they need better vegetarian options if they want 5 sneakers.

This is a race produced by Rhode Races that is part of their wine run series where they have a race in June and September at a local vineyard. The races take place at 3pm. I did the one in June as well. I was on call both weekends and like to do afternoon races on call. I enjoyed this race more than the one in June for a variety of reasons some within the race’s control and some outside of their control. This race is located in MA right by the MA/RI border and is a bit over 1.5 hours for me to get to. There was good pre race communication with a race guide. The race in June had awful, rainy weather but this race had beautiful (although slightly hot weather). This was the factor outside the race’s control. The other thing I liked a lot better was the race set up. At this race we parked right by the start/finish and food tent. It was much better than the one in June where we parked like half a mile away. Packet pick-up was pretty easy and included bib and a shirt. There was a choice of colors for the shirt. I chose a different color than the one I got in June. The race was mostly well produced. My only production critique which is minor is that it was manually timed. I don’t have an issue with race company’s manually timing small races especially races on trail people likely aren’t going to PR but as this was a more casual event people were really slow going to the start line. Maybe they should have let people know as it seemed people thought the race starting when the crossed the start. The course is nice. It is mostly trail and a lot was on dirt paths though some was on grass through the vineyards. It was pretty easy for a trail race and one of the easiest vineyard type races I’ve done. It’s obviously trail and harder than a road race but casual walkers can definitely complete it without issue. I thought it was funny that it was so much easier than that awful cider race I did and this race (appropriately for the terrain) didn’t allow strollers unlike that cider race (not against strollers in a road race but it’s not safe on trail). The race description also described the conditions quite well. The scenery was nice. There was a beautiful part next to a field of flowers. My time was pretty good for a trail race where I had a mild cold. This race was exactly 3 hours. There is no medal but you get a wine glass at the end. Your bib has tickets for wine tasting and a BBQ. I don’t drink so can’t comment on the wine. It was the same catering company and I think the same menu as the BBQ for the race in June. I was not a big fan as there was not much vegetarian options. There was salad, mac n cheese and coleslaw which was enough to hold me over but not enough for the meal. It tasted good enough. Spectators can buy tickets for BBQ only and I would advise against it if vegetarian. Overall I had a fun time at this race and it was good to get 3 races in while I was on-call. I do wish the start went a bit quicker and there was a more substantial vegetarian option at the BBQ. Whether I would do this race again depends on my schedule but if I need an afternoon race I would do it again.
