The Wilmington Historic Half Marathon, 10K and 5K will start in the heart of downtown, taking runners on a beautiful closed course through the streets as they see the true southern beauty of Historic Wilmington North Carolina. After 2.5 miles of downtown running, the 5K splits off to the boardwalk to finish while the half marathon will continue straight over 3 bridges and around a scenic lake before finishing down one of the nations top-rated boardwalks! The 10K splits after the 3rd bridge and heads down the boardwalk to the finish line!
All 3 courses are certified and sanctioned. The time limit for the 5K is 90 minutes and 3.5 hours for the Half Marathon. If you are interested in completing the Historic Challenge you must be able to complete your 5K in 45 minutes or less to get in line for the Half Marathon Start. There will be no late starts allowed.
Finish Line
The Finish Line and After Party will be hosted at the Riverfront Park as well. The after-party includes both Beer & BBQ (you will have voucher tabs on your bib for these).

This was my second half marathon so I can only compare this to my first. I ran the Wilmington Challenge which included a 5k before the half marathon. I thought the scenery running over the bridges, through Historic Wilmington and the park was very relaxing. Running over the grated bridge was a little uncomfortable, but I got over it. It was communicated that the bridges would not be covered even though it had rained most of the day before and morning of the rain. The corral was disorganized with a mixed of 10k and half runners bunches together, but it clears out fairly quickly. Walkers need to move to the left so runners do not have to weave around them. The run along the River required you to back off your pace due tj the wooden path was a slippery at spots.
Overall, I would recommend this race. I have already registered for the 2026 race.

I participated in this half marathon with high hopes, but there were a few significant issues that impacted my race. Firstly, the 2-hour pacers did not maintain a consistent 2-hour pace, which really affected my mindset. I overheard them telling another runner that they aimed for a sub-2-hour finish, and they ended up finishing 7–10 minutes ahead of me, leaving me feeling much slower than usual.
Secondly, the narrow bridges created major bottlenecks, especially with walkers coming from the 10K race. This made it impossible to maintain a steady pace and forced me to expend extra energy. I strongly recommend starting the 10K after the half marathon or using a different route to avoid this congestion.
Lastly, there seemed to be a shortage of volunteers along the course, which made large sections of the race feel quite isolated. More support from volunteers would greatly enhance the runner experience.
Overall, these issues detracted from what could have been a great race, but I hope the organizers take this feedback into account for future events.

I ran this race as part of my goal to run a race in all 50 states. My short and sweet version is that the course isn’t too hard but there are a few hills, the production was pretty good and fit the vibes of the venue and amount of people and the race swag is pretty nice!
The course: The course is mostly flat with a few hills, especially on the bridges. You’ll mostly be running on pavement but there were a few sections over bridges, which if you don’t like heights there’s a portion in the middle with grates that’s a little freaky, and there’s about a mile of running on a board walk. I will say we had some not-so-great weather so some parts of the course were slippery. Running through downtown is really nice. Not a ton of crowd support but the views are nice especially with all of the holiday stuff out. Going over the bridges gives you some great views but traffic is still going while you are out running so be mindful of that. Running through the park is great. It’s really peaceful and has some nice views of the lake in the middle. There are a few aide stations on the course with water and Gatorade. Most of the stops also had a port-a-potty nearby. There’s also a handful of public restrooms around the start and in different sections on the course.
The Production: I think overall the production was pretty good. Initially I thought that this was a bigger race so I was picturing a bit more in terms of the finishing area but with the amount of people we had it ended up being fine. They had lots of food, beer options and a recovery tent. They also had some of the merch from the bib pickup/expo at the finish, but sizing was limited. I had no issues with anything from a technical standpoint and on the course, I feel like I was directed pretty well.
The medal/swag: I don’t mind this year’s medal, but I think it was a bit smaller than it has been in previous years. I think the design was pretty cool though and the challenge badge (though it took some convincing to get onto the strap) looks really cool with the medal! The race shirt was pretty cute this year and feels like it’s made out of good quality material and will be good to use on future runs.
Overall, I feel like I would do this race again and I think I would do the challenge again as I felt like I had a good amount of time between races even going at a slower pace.

Beware of the bridges. If you don’t train on elevation, beware of the bridges. Also, more importantly, they don’t cover the metal grates of the bridges like some of the other races I have run. That said, not the greatest surface to run on and when it’s been raining, it can be slippery. Not a lot of on course support which was disappointing. The loop around the lake was not nearly as scenic as I expected. During the board walk portion, I was more concerned with how slippery the boards were rather than being able to check out the view.
Race production was just ok. They had signs, but a lot were hand written. There wasn’t a ton of pre-race communication. The expo and the race start are about a 30 minute drive apart. Seems like something could be done to make that a bit easier logistically. The sound system at the start made it difficult to hear pre-race announcements. The start corral was disorganized as a result. The course actually went on a highway shoulder at one point with little separating us from the cars.
The medal and shirt are very nice. The medal is very large and the shirt was a cotton long sleeve.

LOVED the soft long sleeve shirt and design. I wear it all the time and like it better than the tech shirts I usually get with races. Wilmington is a great city and gives my girlfriends an excuse to get away for the weekend. The race was fun, I like running around the Greenfield lake. The highway was really dirty and had to jump around debris. I wish a street cleaner would come out and sweep prior to the race. Overall, this a good race, and would recommend to my friends.

Coastal Productions puts on a fun race.

Coastal Race Productions put on a great race weekend. I did the challenge (5K immediately followed by the half marathon). Both races were great. Course support was solid throughout both races. Volunteers and cops were all friendly and helpful. I never felt lost or unsupported, which, as a back of the pack runner, was really nice. Gigantic medals and a really nice quarter zip for the half. Good beer and barbecue at the end. Course was a bit hilly going over some bridges, and running on the metal grating on the bridges can be disorienting. Running along the water was really pretty. I did this for my NC half for a half in every state challenge. Plenty of portos in the start areas.

The Wilmington Historic Half provided a nice destination event in beautiful Wilmington, North Carolina. The course explores some of the historic downtown and ends by following the great riverwalk along the Cape Fear river. The race was well organized and the swag was fantastic!
The course began at a pretty riverfront park. Parking and hotels are within easy walking distance. A 5k started first and there was special challenge swag for those who run both. The first 2 miles of the run were through the historic downtown before crossing the first of three large bridges. These bridges presented the only real hills on the course. Two of them had metal grating on the decks which felt very strange to run on, even with the burlap mats they put down for the runners. The course through here is along very busy roads, though good separation from traffic is provided. The course then moved out to paved trails around a lake before returning to downtown where it finished by following the riverfront for the last mile or so along the town’s boardwalk riverwalk.
The course was scenic at times, particularly downtown and along the river. However, nearly half is of the run is along busy roads, even though the bridges provide nice views of the river. The only major problem I noted was uneven nature of the running surfaces and lots of quick twists and turns on the last mile. Saw a couple of runners almost trip on the curbs as we went on and off sidewalk and some little wooden bridges as we circled the lake in the park.
The post race party was nice with a free beer and good BBQ. The quarter zip shirt for participants was really nice and not covered with the names of sponsors like so many other races. The shirt was picked up post race as the bibs were mailed out about a week before. Finally, the finisher’s metal was absolutely enormous!
Overall, this was a great run to travel to North Carolina for. I would not hesitate to run this or any other races produced by this company again.

The swag is awesome. If you sign up to run the challenge, you’ll run a 5k first then followed by the half marathon. That earns you two shirts and two medals in one day. At the end of the race, we also received a fleece blanket. I take that blanket to all my other races to stay warm afterwards.
