This is a 5K on a Thursday in Wilmington, MA that took place about 1 week before July 4 weekend. Wilmington is a very convenient location located close to me and pretty much in the middle of all the locations I work at so I could do this race no matter where I am working. There was limited pre race communication but the website was updated. There was an option for earlier bib pick-up but I just did it race day. The race starts/finishes at a fair in Wilmington where there are rides and booths and food vendors. It is a fun location and would be especially fun for families. Parking was nearby at a church though parking filled up quickly. I arrived a little less than an hour before the start and there wasn’t much parking left. Pack pick-up was easy and included a grey shirt with the race logo and a bag of other little sponsored goodies like a tape measurer and ChapStick and some brochures from local businesses. The race is a loop and is chip timed. It started on time at 6:30pm. It was a bit hot and humid though not as bad as it has been some days here. The course is a nice loop through the neighborhoods around Wilmington. The neighborhoods are pretty and tree lined but the course but the course was quite similar to all of the neighborhood 5K’s I do around this area. It was well-marked and streets were either closed, partially closed, coned off or very quiet so traffic wasn’t a concern. There were police or course marshals at all important intersections and road crossings. There were also mile markers and some spectators in the neighborhood. There were a few small hills but I thought it was less hilly than other similar races. I was hoping to be a bit faster than I was but it was still a bit hot and muggy. I finished around 38 minutes which is my usual but not my fast time. There was some post race BBQ but I had plans after and wasn’t sure there was anything vegetarian. There is no medal but hardly any of these 5K’s in New England have them. Overall this was a nice, local, convenient 5K. Being at the fair made it fun for families. I would do it again if it worked out with my schedule.
