The Silent Wings Museum provides the perfect backdrop to “imagine” your run taking you out of this world. Willie McCool was the Pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia (January – February 2003), a graduate of Lubbock’s Coronado High School (1979) and loved running. This race begins at the Silent Wings museum by the Lubbock Airport.
It is organized by West Texas Endurance, a local event organization that does a super job.
The course takes you around the country club area on the outskirts of Lubbock, however there is a train track crossing that often postpones several participants.
My favorite part of this race is getting to shake hands and receive medals from Mr. and Mrs. McCool, Willie’s parents.
The AG awards are also terrific. Slate plaques with the race emblem on them.
Results are immediate and the race is very well organized. A must run if you are in the Lubbock area.

Thanks for the great review Debbie, always love welcoming in fellow Maniacs & 50 staters! It's our goal here on the site to make more runners aware of hidden gems like Willie McCool. Running for a charitable cause or in someone's memory always makes a race so much more meaningful. Congrats too on the cool AG medal, the slate is unique and reminds me of the clay medallions at Big Sur. Keep running strong, and look forward to following your adventures! (Love your profile pic, too – now that's a happy finisher! I'm trying to fit REVEL Mt. Charleston into my schedule in April.) LESS
