I stayed overnight in Albany after the Run 4 the River Hf on Saturday and wanted to find a 5K that was relatively close. I was happy to find this one in Saratoga Springs about 30 minutes away. It raises money to help a local who was paralyzed in an accident and is a nice grassroots sort of race. It’s a smaller race and it’s obviously not as professionally produced as a race by a big racing company but they did a really good job for what it is. There wasn’t much in terms of pre race communication but the website had all the necessary information. The course was located at Saratoga Spa State Park and starting at a place called the warming hut which is this indoor area with a fire pit. It was a gorgeous day out so didn’t need the fire pit but it would be wonderful on a cold or rainy day and was a nice cozy place for packet pickup. Packet included a shirt and a drawstring bag with some small sponsored items. It was typical or maybe even a bit better than the usual swag for a 5K like this. The race was chip timed. Apparently there were a few issues with assigning timing chips for people who arrived late but they were upfront about this and it was addressed and fixed. It didn’t affect me as I was early. The course is essentially an out a back although there is a slight different in where you go out and where you return. It is all in the state park and on sidewalks, paved paths or quiet streets without traffic. It is pretty, tree-lined, shaded and flat thought not the most interesting course. It was well marked with arrows and the turnaround sign though it was a pretty simple course to follow. I pushed myself pretty hard yesterday so I knew I’s be slow and my goal was under 40 which I reached. No medal at the end. There was a nice selection of food with munchkins and coffee from dunkins and some local apple cider donuts along with some healthier choices. There was also a nice raffle. Overall this was a nice, smaller race. I’d recommend it if you are in the area and was worth the 30 minute drive from Albany though I’m not sure I’d drive much further for it. It’s probably a one and done for me but if I end up doing Run 4 the River again and stay overnight in Albany after again I’d make the trek back to Saratoga Springs for it.
