Definitely one of the best organized races that I’ve been to. The course fuel was also the best I’ve seen: pickles, olives, peanut butter cups, and lots of other great items. After race snacks included pizza, baked goods and the usual bananas and granola bars.
If you are expecting a race PR, this is NOT, I repeat, NOT the race to expect to do it in. The hills were endless, but the scenery made up for it. It was definitely my longest time for a half marathon, considering the hills and the 80 degree weather.
The only suggestion that I would have is to start the races earlier in the morning. A 9:30 start time for a half marathon in 80 degree weather was tough. Other than that, Old Dominion Racing did an absolutely fabulous job with this race. Thank you!

This race is very well organized. It has amazing suport. There is fuel, water and bathrooms every other mile. The different distances are so spread out that you never feel alone in the race but you are not on top of each other so you can enjoy the views. The after party seemed nice but I don’t usually partake. Definitely had plenty food and drinks.
I will probably sign for the the 10k next time. The longer distances are extraneous. Definitely worth a repeat!

I chose this race at the last minute because it was within driving distance for me and fit my training calendar well. I stayed at a La Quinta Inn & Suites in Winchester, VA. It was about 35 minutes from the start location at the Hill School in Middleburg, VA. I always prefer picking up my packet ahead of time if possible, so I did go to the packet pick-up location at PR Run & Walk in Leesburg, but that ended up being out of the way in a shopping center with challenging parking. In retrospect, I wish I had just waited for race morning packet pick-up, which it looked like many people were doing with no problem. This is a smaller race, but was well-organized with enthusiastic volunteers. The course is the hilliest I have ever encountered! Whew! It is gorgeous running past horse farms, and the design of the course means you are always around other runners on various segments of their race (a full, a Merikos (19.65 Miles), a half, a 10K, and a 5K are all running together, which is nice. Even though I had trained well on hills, I had to walk way more than I planned on, so I just enjoyed the morning. I am proud of myself for finishing and it was a nice Virginia race for my 50 States goal, but I won’t be rushing to do this one again.

I’m from out of state, and flew in for this race.
It was super cold, and very hilly- also, three out and backs. If you come in mentally prepared for that, you’ll be good. I met many first timers at the back of the pack that were discouraged by how hard that was and how long it took. I kept trying to tell them that this was one of the hilliest races I’ve ever done. It also didn’t help that there were almost no spectators, so it was definitely more “gorgeous reflective nature run” vibes than “big final race” vibes. I picked my bib up morning of. Not a problem. Don’t even show up ten minutes early for that.

I ran this race in 2021. The location is unique leading to cool scenery, but the organization of the race was rough.
When the 5k runners started, we were met by an understandably ticked off group of marathoners returning from their long race. They had to bob and weave in and out of the wave of 5k runners, leading to frustration on both sides.
The timing system didn’t seem to work well. The results were uploaded then deleted then uploaded and deleted throughout the afternoon following the race.
We were told winners of their divisions would receive prizes in the mail, but no prize came. Overall I did not register to run this race again in 2022.
