Course Difficulty: 10 out of 10. This one had everything: mountains, streams, quad crushing downhills, 12000′ of elevation gain, miles of ankle busting technical rocks, and a bear that was a little too curious for my comfort. It was tough.
Course Scenery: Amazing. Most of the course was run along the ridgelines of some of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the vistas were gorgeous. Add in the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, pine trees, and the mountain mist…nice.
Race Production: Really good. No surprises at all. Everything started on time, and the volunteers were great. All aid stations were as advertised, and the course was marked well enough that I never felt lost. Pre-race information was timely and accurate.
Race Swag: Awesome buckle and dry-fit tee.
My Performance: I had a hard goal of “don’t DNF” and a soft goal of 18 hours; needless to say, I’m thrilled with my finish time.
Final notes: This is a tough course meant to test your body and brain. The field is fast, as this is a race, and not just a run. Definitely not a first timers race for the 100k, but if you feel you’re up to a challenge…go get that buckle!
