The Barrier Island Ultras take place just adjacent to the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world – Mustang Island gets its name from the wild horses that roamed the island for hundreds of years. This chain of barrier islands protect miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life. They are also a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle and a haven for over 380 bird species.
Runners will start the race at our salty seaside bar serving as the start/finish area. Experience crashing waves, salty air, hard packed sand, ocean breezes, and open beaches on this out and back course. Wind down after the race with sand between your toes and enjoy a beer, a margarita, or seafood to mark the occasion.
Well stocked Aid Stations, conveniently located every 3-5 miles on the out and back course, will be manned by passionate volunteers and unmanned aid stations, provide:
First Aid: Band-Aids, Vaseline, and other basic first aid supplies
Food/Drink: Water, electrolyte drinks, and various salty, sweet and savory snacks
Everyone registered will receive a Barrier Island Ultra Race Shirt if they register by October 21, 2020. Finishers of the 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon, 50k, and 50mi will receive beautiful, custom designed medals based on availability.

Would absolutely recommend this race and the organizers to fellow runners! The race is super laidback, but that does not come at the expense of the runner experience at all. They had plenty of food at the aid stations (including sliced oranges which are always awesome); the volunteers cheered like crazy and encouraged the runners; and the course turnarounds were well marked. Being as this race was on the hard-packed sand, it felt like a road race — on the beach — and the fact that the weather was perfect certainly helped! Love beach running so this was basically a supported run in my happy place for me.
