NOLA is always a good time with friends, and having lived in the city for a couple of years, I knew where to go and where not to go. We rented an awesome B&B near the start/finish, so we walked to the start and walked home after! The first half of the course is fun along St. Charles and through the Garden District, but the second half along the lake was super windy, not scenic at all and couldn’t go by fast enough.

Would absolutely recommend this race and the organizers to fellow runners! The race is super laidback, but that does not come at the expense of the runner experience at all. They had plenty of food at the aid stations (including sliced oranges which are always awesome); the volunteers cheered like crazy and encouraged the runners; and the course turnarounds were well marked. Being as this race was on the hard-packed sand, it felt like a road race — on the beach — and the fact that the weather was perfect certainly helped! Love beach running so this was basically a supported run in my happy place for me.

If you’re looking for a RI race, this won’t be your favorite. The town is nice and the volunteers are great, but the course was awful … it goes through some weird parking lot, onto a greenway briefly, to a super busy stretch where two runners almost got hit by a car, and toward the end, you have to go over a freeway bridge, then literally pass the turn for the finish line to run around a cone first then go back. There is no place to wait at the beginning of the race and very little worth sticking around after the race. If you want spectators and a well organized race, keep looking.

The atmosphere of this race is pure fun. Many of the racers actually camp in the open field near the trails, so there is a bon fire, music, breweries pouring samples onsite, lots of kids and dogs. I ran the 50K but had friends running the relay so we teamed up to run loops together which was fun and it was nice to sit down and change my shoes or eat a snack if I wanted between loops. Local race with good organization, well-marked trail and overall fun weekend!

If you haven’t run it, do it! As far as being a runner goes, these roads leading to Boston are unlike any other race you can do and though it might be hard work to get there, most runners will say it’s worth it.

It’s packed with BQ hopefuls and previous Boston runners, so the vibe is encouraging and feels like a rehearsal for running Boston … except this course is flat minus a tiny rise that I didn’t even notice and the awesomeness of a double loop. Parking is easy, day of and packet pick up was easy. I’ll be back.

Ran this race with a friend trying to qualify for Boston which made it a fast and beautiful 50K as well! It is a flat, fast and well-organized out-and-back race on a rails to trails course with ample parking and great volunteers. If you want a fast, low-key race to check off the state of VA, this is it!
