Running this race was my late decision this year, in place of a coronavirus-cancelled full marathon. This is a relatively small race with a long history and enthusiastic volunteer support, friendly atmosphere and a small town feel. I especially liked the race logo-decorated cookies from a local Boylston bakery this year.
The hills around Wachusett Reservoir were scenic and relentless, quite familiar, as I ran this race for the third time. Come prepared, and you will find the hills quite manageable as long as you “respect” them instead of attacking them with full force.
This year’s wimpy winter threw enough cold and some blustery chill to make it feel like “normal” winter (well, still without snow). Dress for the weather (but don’t overdress!) and save enough gas for the short but steep climb one mile away from the finish line.
It’s a great training run for your spring marathon. Great place to check your progress and have enough time to adjust your training. Bring your friends to run the relay with you if you opt for a shorter distance.
