Cincinnati’s longest running ultra-marathon, the Stone Steps 50k and 27K is held in Mt. Airy Forest, a gem of a park just a couple miles from beautiful downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Mt. Airy Forest offers an unparalleled backdrop for endurance runners looking to challenge themselves and find solace in nature. These ultra marathon races attract trailblazers of all levels, from seasoned veterans seeking their next big accomplishment to enthusiastic newcomers eager to test their limits.
Ultra marathons are not just races; they are a journey of self-discovery and determination. The camaraderie among runners, the thrill of traversing rugged terrains, and the sheer beauty of the forest make each race an unforgettable experience. With well-marked trails, fully stocked aid stations, and a supportive community of fellow runners and volunteers, you’ll feel both challenged and encouraged every step of the way.
The 50k trail race is a loop course on single track trails. One 5+ mile loop is run four times, alternating with a 3+ mile loop run three times. An aid station is located at the end of each loop.
Net proceeds from the Stone Steps trail races go to support the fantastic parks of Cincinnati.

This was my 12th Stone Steps 50K. RDs Dave and Andy really worked hard this year to make this race happen during the pandemic. I felt very comfortable with the way the staggered start and aid station were set up. While the course is challenging, the “figure 8” course layout means you use the same aid station 5 times during the race which was great in allowing an easy option to be self-supported.
While the swag this year was minimal, the cost has always been the best dollar-per-mile value out there!

This is a small, local trail race consisting of repeating loops with a single, well stocked aid station that you pass by frequently where you can access drop bags and restrooms as well. Mostly technical single-track trails through the woods with some stretches across fields. Generally runable, with two major climbs – The Stone Steps and Gummy Bear hill, both found on the big loop.
If this and the low entry fees were not enough of a selling point, the race director makes a point to congratulate all of the finishers as they cross the finish line to give them their medals. Additionally, they offer an early start for runners who think they need a little more time to finish. I’ve been to races where time cutoffs are strictly enforced, but this is not one of those races. They truly want to see everyone cross the finish line, even if it after the official close of the race.
The shirts are soft, the age group prizes are unique, and the post-race stretching/massage put this one over the top.
The Stone Steps are no joke
