Came from Las Cruces, NM to run the Steamworks Half Marathon in Durango, CO. Race is capped at 250 so small event. Shuttles to a beautiful start line location on the Animas River. Shuttles, race start and the day went very smoothly with no hiccups that I was aware of.
They offered a bag drop. However, this was not on their website or in any of the pre race communication we saw. This would have been helpful to know. We had wanted to do a bag drop, but because we didn’t see it on the website we planned differently. Would recommend adding this to the website.
Course runs along the County Hy and is mostly shaded. No real views of the river, but the Hy is parallel’ish to the river most of the way. The course is an overall net gain, but not a hard course at all by our standards. That’s all relative though depending on where you come from. The elevation in this area I believe is 4000-5000 ft (??) so this may or may not be something to consider depending on where you’re traveling from.
The road was NOT closed and there is no real shoulder. Riding the shuttle out to the start line this had me a bit “concerned”. However, the traffic in the morning was very minimal and ended up really not be an issue.
Course is a long straight shot except for the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile so you can’t get lost! 🙂
Race ends back where you pick up the shuttle in the morning. It’s the local fitness club. The after race party is an outdoor pool party and families encouraged. Neat idea we’ve not seen at any of our race events.
Post race food was “free” beer, pizza, salads and cookies. Suggestions would be to add a NA beer to the list. Pizza line was LONG and you stood in the hot sun waiting. Suggestion might be to serve something different that’s more grab and go? Food was certainly good though!
The tshirts were a bust in my opinion. They were unisex which us female runners tend to be petite and a unisex will not fit many of us. They were able to locate an XS for me and it was still HUGE! Unfortunately mine will go straigtht to the donate pile. The shirt itself was rather plain and my husband was disappointed. That’s personal taste, though. You can’t please everyone.
There were no medals at the finish line. Some like this. Some don’t. Some don’t care. You received a pint glass which I have enough race finish line pint glasses to now open my own brewery! Again, personal preference but for me please…..no more finisher glasses!
There was only 1 porta potty at 1 location on the entire 13.1 mile course. I know it was a small race, but seemed a bit skimpy. The 1 porta potty was placed at the half way mark which also was a popular spot for spectators. Therefore there were runners and spectators in line for the porta potty and about a 5 person wait line. I would add 2 porta potties at this location and/or add another potty spot along the course.
Overall a good destination race for us! Spending a few additional days in Durango and then a few days in Ouray to make it a 10 day vacation. Thanks for hosting us from Las Cruces!
