A small local race sponsored by the Buena Park Lions Club that is held in conjunction with the Silverado Days festival. I paid only $22.50 using the Gemini discount code and I signed up 1 day before the race! The only pre-race communications were via the Silverado Days website, which only had info about packet pick up, start time, prizes, and included race swag. (No info on parking, late registration, picking up friends’ packets, results/photos, etc.) The course was nice and flat (but not scenic), and the mile markers were way off! While it didn’t affect me personally, several of the runners in the front were accidentally misrouted by the volunteers, which added an extra 0.4 of a mile to their distance (which threw off their finish times). Several of the affected runners were angry about this. Rules to entering the costume contest weren’t clearly communicated either. A couple of my friends had no idea if they won or not. On a positive note, the included unisex cotton t-shirt & medal were very nice and the volunteers were friendly & helpful. While there is room for improvement, I feel that I got good value for my registration fee.

This a small scale run with Gemini Timing that runs entirely through neighborhood streets in Buena Park and is entirely flat. The run is early – 7am. There were only about 250 runners but they do advertise prizes for the division winners. As no runner finished in less then 20 minutes this might be a good run if you’re speedy.
Parking was a little confusing. I found the best way to enter off of La Palma was by taking El Monte (do not enter by Knott). It is at William Peak Park – the site of the Silverado Days carnival (which unfortuately does not start until 10 am so you have quite a wait if you wanted to attend. The run was rather inexpensive. With a Gemini discount code it only cost me $22.50 just days before.
About the 2 mile mark Volunteers attempt to pass out bottles of water. Like many people I passed on this as I didn’t want to carry a bottle with me.
There is not a lot of frills but the medal is substantial and you get a T-Shirt. Nothing much to see at the expo and no #FreeBanana.

Apparently, Silverado Days is a Buena Park cowboy-themed festival that has been going on for 38 years. They just added the 5k this year and if I didn’t sprain my ankle running the Long Beach Marathon on October 11, I would’ve tried to win first place, at least in my division (division best 22:49). So I coasted and ran with my coworker to try to improve her PR, which she did! The fastest time was 20:19 so anyone looking to win something and break a record, sign up next year! (I know I will, my average is 20:34!).

Since this is a local event, the organization wasn’t that great, but it wasn’t too bad. The course ran through the nearby neighborhood so it was a fairly flat course. The only problems were the paths were very narrow as they left a lot of room for the pavement for cars to drive and do their weekend business, security wasn’t ready in the beginning, and the opening ceremony wasn’t very uplifting. But…on the positive side, they had Chick-fil-A as a sponsor, you received a shirt and medal, lots of volunteers cheering you on, and weather was perfect.

Overall, a great event for anyone wanting to try out a 5k, anyone training in general, or anyone that needs the push to get off the bed and do a morning run. It wasn’t too expensive either! $18 when Renegade emailed out a discount code ($30 without).
