Schaeffer Farms has some of the best singletrack around and we stage the race at the beautiful private Button Farm. You are going to LOVE this race venue and course!!
This course is known for it’s twisty singletrack and wide-open farm field running. Schaeffer is located in Germantown, MD and is an easy drive from anywhere around the DMV on race morning.
The 5K and 10K courses are the same courses used in the summer Blue Crab Bolt race at Schaeffer. However, the landscape changes significantly from summer to late fall and both courses offer runners a new experience at Schaeffer. The half marathon is one of our favorite courses that we offer as it’s a perfect mix of beautiful singletrack and really unique open farm field running.
Course Length/Elevation Gain: 13.5 miles (HM+, 1,000ft), 6.7 miles (10K++, 500ft), 3.2 miles (5K+, 230ft)
Registration fee includes: Fun and challenging course design, awesome finisher medal, professional race operations, wonderful volunteer support, well-stocked aid stations, medical support, plentiful post-race food (breakfast burritos and other tasty treats – yum!), electric atmosphere, great music, awards and give-a-ways, and a race t-shirt you’ll love.

This was a rough one for me. I’ve done shorter trail runs before but never a half so this was challenging for me. It had rained the day before so the course was muddy and a bit slick which probably didn’t help.
The course was beautiful. Hilly and rocky, lots of branches and corn cobs near the cornfield sections of the race so a lot of potential hazards. Given that the race is on a private farm there wasn’t much by way of spectator support but I was working so hard I didn’t care as much as I usually would.
I crossed the finish line bloody and at a much slower pace than I typically run, so the medal was well earned. Being a back of the pack runner there wasn’t much left by way of post-race refreshments, but it sounds like there were some good things earlier on. Love the shirt.
If you’re a seasoned trail runner you’ll probably love this.

Easy and fun. Laidback crowd. Some mountain bikers. I had lackluster performance. I wrote a little blog at Huffington Post — I’m probably in the wrong, but I can’t say I appreciated the other runner yelling obscenities at me as she went by.
