Solid Event - Room For Improvement

Last year was the first year that I ran in the Keller Turkey Trot. I can say that I enjoyed the race enough that I decided to run it again in 2025. I’m from Arlington/Fort Worth – In the past I’ve done the Arlington and Fort Worth Turkey Trots. I decided to run out in Keller for a change of pace. I was not dissapointed in that regard. Fun set up. The 5K course is a big loop that starts at the Town Hall, then loops around through the neighborhood before bringing you back around to the Town Hall. The course is a rolling one with small ups and downs. That is until just before mile 2 where there is a decent hill to climb which you will feel.
Biggest criticism – The 5K and the 10K race courses intersect. For that reason, the 5K racers have to wait until ALL of the 10K racers have completed the first two miles of the course before the 5K racers start. The net effect of this is that the 5K racers are in the race shoot for way longer than they should be as they wait for all the 10K runner to complete the first two miles. This being the case – the fix would be to start the 5K race 20-30 minutes later and keep the race shoot closed until then as runners will invariably want to get in there as soon as possible. Runners get edgy in these situations. Many have trained hard and want to have the best performance they can. Sitting in a crowded starting shoot for 20 minutes was not ideal.
Other than that, this is a great event. – Great course, great atmosphere. And dare I say, great competition. I finished 4th in my age group (50-59) averaging a 7:18 mile pace. That is usually fast enough to crack the podium in most other races. Not here – These old guys were flying – Admittedly one of the reasons I am returning is to see if I can take one or two of those guys down this year. – Overall – great event.

First of all, I LOVE that the city of Keller is so invested in encouraging the community to get out and exercise outdoors. Between frequent races at city hall to weekly parkrun from keller pointe, clearly Keller has made the physical health of its citizens a top priority.
This race was fun and a great way to kick off Thanksgiving without dealing with the crowds of the more popular FW or Dallas turkey trots. Packet pick up was easy peasy with multiple days/times at Bear Creek Running store. I always wish these things were cheaper, but at least a portion of the money is going to a good cause (Community Storehouse).
That said, there is definitely some room for improvement in terms of race production. Most importantly, at the point in which the 5k and 10k converge, there needs to be two lanes – one for 5k runners and one for 10k runners. The fastest 10k runners were funneled into a mass of slow jogging 5k runners, which is frustrating and honestly kind of unsafe. I do love the keller trails, but I think there are enough 10k runners to warrant the move off the trails for next year. It’s just too congested with there being an out and back situation on the sidewalk sized trail.
The race did not start on time. I know often races are delayed because police are getting in position, but there was no mention of this being the issue. I think the MC just wasn’t watching the clock. The lead up to the gun was way too long and drawn out. Runners warmed up, entered the corral, and then stood around for 15 minutes freezing while the MC talked. Not ideal.
Signs and turn points were relatively clear, so kudos for that. Shirt was turkey colored, which doesn’t look good on anyone. I was nervous about the hill on bear creek but honestly that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the race!
Overall, we do this for fun, and fun was had. I’ll call that a success. Next year may just try a different local Turkey Trot (or stick to the 5k).

The race announcer made the race more difficult. Before the race started he loved to hear himself talk, but it was very disrespectful to the runners who had come trained and ready to run. He talked too long, then the mayor spoke too long and then another official wanted to say a good saying about Americans (but added to the delayed start), then the anthem. The anthem should have been played before 8am and everything else before that so the race would start on time.
Later the announcer was so busy talking he didn’t realize runners were finishing. He completely missed the finish with the top runners.
Next people were standing in front of the time clocks so that most people couldn’t see them (including the 5k runners who were finishing). People needed to be screened away from that area because they didn’t realize they were blocking the clock. Or the clocks needed to be higher (above people).
For the runners in the 10k the last mile was miserable because they had to weave in and out of the 5k walkers. There were large numbers of walkers taking up much of the street the 10k runners had to weave around. In most races like this one side of the street is for the 5k people and the other side of the street is for the 10k competitors.
