When Robert Leonardi was tragically killed on July 7, 2019 by an impaired driver on Golf Course Road, our community was devastated. The Leonardi and Yoakum families have been an important part of our lives for decades. Following Robert’s funeral, a community run was quickly organized and over 200 people participated to show their support. Since that time, we have embraced the challenge of creating a community event that not only brings people together in celebration of Robert’s life, but also embodies the courage to try, a quality Robert always demonstrated.
This run raises funds for the Play Like Robert Foundation which has donated over $100,000 to projects that connect people through learning, play, and the courage to try. Additionally, the foundation is embarking on a pedestrian trail project on Golf Course Road and throughout Hamilton to make our streets safer for children and families. From his handwriting in the Robert’s Run logo to his favorite color blue, Robert leaves his mark on the race, and we celebrate his memory by giving out ice cream sandwiches, his favorite food, at the festival on race day. As over a thousand people gather in Hamilton on the first Saturday in August, we are reminded of Robert’s spirit and his courage to try. Whether you run or walk, whether you join us in person or participate from another state, we come together to celebrate our love for Robert, the Leonardi and Yoakam families, and the strength of our community.

Amazing race in a tight knit community that welcomes everyone. Bernard Lagat gave an amazing running clinic and speech the night before, and was around the race on Saturday. The 10k course had a minor issue, but the one mile and 5k went perfectly. Supports a great cause!

This run was one of the most enjoyable runs I’ve ever participated in. I ran with two of my sons and one of their friends and they all commented on how fun and enjoyable the course was. It was run mostly on back roads, some of it was run on a trail. The trail was one of the best parts. There were two watering stations, which was plenty for the 10k. Lot’s of volunteers to cheer you on, make sure you stayed on course, and maintain safety in case something went wrong. There was only one hill that was fairly steep, but I didn’t train like I should have so it may not have been THAT steep! I will be running this race every year from this point forward. And if I can’t run it, I’ll become a volunteer! If you have never tried Robert’s run, you should do it at least once. You’ll probably become hooked!
