As my first Ragnar I wasn’t sure what to expect! Boy it was a fun weekend! Michigan is beautiful and the after party on Lake Michigan was awesome. Highly recommend any Ragnar race to those social, slightly crazy running enthusiasts out there.

Ragnar puts on an amazing weekend for the runners. If you don’t already know the others runners in your van at the start of the event, it’s a guarantee that will change by the time you all get to cross the finish line together. Western Michigan provides some hills, paved paths, quaint towns, and plenty of good scenery to run through.

This was my second ragnar. And, it was the Ragnar Michigan inaugural. Even though this was the first year for this particular Ragnar, it did not have the pains of an inaugural. Everything went smoothly.
The weather is unpredictable this time of the year in MI, so you must be physically and mentally prepared for all types. This year, we got rain and more rain. Since you are living in a van with 5 others, “soaked shoe smell” is a possibility.
Also, train for hills. Long hills. Steep hills. Dark hills. Rolling hills. If you love hills, this is for you. If you hate hills, learn to love them.
The views are spectacular almost the entire length, as it follows the Shoreline Trail. Where it’s not spectacular, it’s simply beautiful. Hardly a bad leg on this one.
Strong runners, be the 4th runner. You get the bonus medal for doing this one. And the courses are brag-worthy. (In case you don’t know, in addition to the finisher medal, the runner who completed the hardest leg, gets a bonus medal).
Want a free pair of shoes? Be the team captain. They all get free shoes from Reebok.
I loved every minute of this race and plan to do it again.
