Reebok Ragnar Road Great Midwest, the “fastest” road relay course in the Ragnar series, is back this May! Your team of 12 (or 6) will kick off the journey in Waukegan, just outside of Chicago, and head north past epic views of Lake Michigan. You’ll take turns running through the countryside by lakes and over rolling hills with a billion stars lighting your path. Watch the sun come up as you make your way past picturesque red barns, happy cows, and quintessential Midwest scenery. Then, your whole team will cross the finish line arch together, tired and triumphant. Party at the new Willow Island finish line, where team medals, bragging rights, and endless memories await! Don’t miss the challenge that will have you saying, “I can’t believe we’re doing this,” and “When can we do this again?” in the same, tired breath! NEW this year – All the best of Ragnar Road, packed into a single day. Don’t want to do the whole overnight thing? Join us for the Sprint version of this race. Same weekend! Same place. This one day event is headed to Madison on Saturday. If you love a good team challenge, crave time in the great outdoors, and prefer soft sheets to sleeping in a van, this Sprint relay might be exactly your speed — 1 day, 6 runners, 12 legs and 70-ish miles.

We were assigned a start time that was too early for the speed of our team, so we had to be concerned with being held at exchanges. Not cool! We also were running with very few people, which simply isn’t fun in Ragnar. We had storms, which kept us from running all the legs (understandable, since weather can’t be controlled). However, the rules from the Race Bible for how the team’s times should be calculated due to storms wasn’t followed by the Race Director. Average team’s pace were supposed to be calculated according to the Bible; instead we a just had 5 hours subtracted from our total time. Most disturbing of all was the fact that there WERE NOT CLEAR DIRECTIONS FOR RUNNERS AT EXCHANGE 18! IF I DIDN’T HAVE MY PHONE, I WOULD’VE GOTTEN LOST IN THE DARK. SIGNS WERE MOVED ON THE COURSE SO WE DIDN’T KNOW WHICH WAY TO GO. So much room for improvement on controllable factors. This made our team very concerned about whether we want to do another Ragnar in the future. I won’t be back to the “Great” Midwest.
Another fun experience.
My second Ragnar Chicago and I enjoyed my experience. Bathrooms lines can be quite long be prepared. The weather could have been better but nothing they can do about that. MORE

This is my 5th Ragnar. You need to figure out the porta-potty situation please. It was absolutely horrific by Saturday afternoon. Also, we were short a runner and submitted repeated requests for an earlier start but were told that was not an option. As a result we finished somewhat late and to be honest the fanfare was NOT THE SAME. The exchanges were doing their final sweeps, etc. so it was NOT THE SAME EXPERIENCE had we been given an earlier start. Not sure when I will do another Ragnar after this less than stellar race production this year….

It is put together very well and everyone is super helpful and knowledgeable. I will say they needed more bathrooms at the exchanges, especially the major ones. Also need more sleeping areas indoors in case of rain. Overall it’s a great race and it will definitely test your endurance and push you to the limit.

This is total team effort! We lived in 2 vans – 6 people per van for the entire race which took us 30 hours or more to finish. You hustle and bustle when you are team support duty. You hustle and bustle when you’re the runner. You eat when you’re off duty. If the weather is bad, you have to sleep in your van in the small space you’re allotted. And, showers aren’t happening. So, bring your body wipes. Google packing lists and you will find they are spot on. Also, unleash your creativity and bring your window markers. Drawing on vans is encouraged, but you will have to clean the off when you’re done. Plan on a lot of water and Gatorade – even more than you’ll think you’ll need. Leave your drama at home or you’ll annoy your van mates.
I would highly recommend this epic adventure. You’ll have a whole new family when you’re done.
