This is a small half marathon organized by the Oahe YMCA in Pierre, SD. The race was chip timed, and about half of it was paved roads and half smooth, crushed-limestone trail. There were aid stations about every two miles, but the only hydration that was offered to me was water, which was okay due to the cooler temperatures. There were a lot of birds to see and hear along the river, including Canada Geese, ducks, Bald Eagles, Ring-necked Pheasants, and White Pelicans. All participants were given a short-sleeved running shirt and a very nice-looking finisher’s medal. It was a shame that there were only 38 runners, but Pierre isn’t a very big town, and it is in a fairly isolated rural area. Even if you don’t live nearby, it is a worthwhile run if you want to be out in nature instead of a congested, big-city half marathon.
