This was the 17th running of the Downtown Anaheim 5k which has been sponsored lately by Northgate Gonzalez Market. The course is flat and mainly runs on some major streets in the downtown area. The rejuvenated Downtown area is a wonderful spot to start and enjoy the festivities at the finish. Otherwise there isn’t a lot of scenery.
This race is fairly inexpensive. A email was sent out by the race directors explaining why they do not provide medals to all participants in order to keep costs in line. This is fine with me. A 5k Run isn’t T-Ball.
I arrived at 6:30am for the 7:30 run at parked in the parking garage off of Clementine St next to the expo area. Lines for the few Porta potties are long so plan ahead. The start is actually unmarked around the corner on a street so be aware of that.
Right after Mile 1 you will see members of the River Church handing out whole bottles of water (this actually happens 3 times on the course!). The course itself has its own water station (cups of water) .1 mile away. If you do not feel like carting around a full Bottle of water make sure to bypass the friendly church people in one of their 3 stations and stick with the course stations at the 1.2 mile mark and around 2.2 miles.
The expo at the end is always wacky. This is my fourth time here and the variety of give aways is always cool… where else can you get Yakult, a bagel, A McDonald’s smoothie, a bag of small rice and panty liners? They have bands playing and they always seem to find bands with kids in high school or younger to play. Always good…. I do not recall seeing a photographer anywhere on course but maybe I missed them….
