This race was organized and directed by Jeremy Nicolosi, owner of Beast Trail Racing. He started putting on ultramarathons only a year ago, but runs his races like a pro. He thought of everything expected of ultramarathons, including hot food throughout the race events, marking the course unambiguously so no one could go off course, supplied a range of hydration options, quality bling, and he even brought some of his friends from Louisiana as volunteers. The hospitality of Jeremy and his volunteers was incredible. One of the volunteers helped me set up my shelter in the rain and helped me take it down after I was finished and carried it to my vehicle. I hope that word gets out about the incredible job Jeremy is doing so his races can grow to where they should be.
I did not run this race last year, which was at a different location, but it sounds like the new location is a big improvement. The trail was mostly wide, crushed limestone that went around one side of Willow Creek Reservoir at Willow Creek State Recreation Area. A one mile stretch went along the top of the dam, and the wind was pretty strong going back to the start/finish area. In better weather, the views of pastoral farmland would make it worthwhile. Event options ranged from 48 hours to 3 hours, and awards were given out to the top male and female in each event. Additionally, distance-specific belt buckles were given out to finishers of marathon distance or longer, and medals were given for shorter distances. All in all, it was a well organized race that is worth coming back to again and again.
