Coastal Trail Runs’ New Year’s One Day is a time endurance event run in Hellyer Park in south San Jose. The time options are 24, 12, and 6 hours. I did the 6-hour time. There is also a 100 mile distance (24-hour time limit).
The course is a figure-8 circuit of the lake and a playing field in the park, with a short side loop through the start/finish area to count laps (electronically), ~1.03 miles. The lake and playing field are very pleasant, though the on-and-off sprinkle-showers while I was doing my 6 hours made keeping one’s head down a reasonable thing to do.
The only “aid station” was under the picnic pavilion at the start/finish area. Initially there were snacks like Oreos, Rice Krispie treats and pieces of bagels, but as time went on there were cut up fruit and quesadillas made on a camp stove. In the evening soup was available, though that was after I completed my 6 hours.
All in all, the event is very well done. My event Tee is a saturated purple tech-type, with artwork based on the event’s former venue in SF, the Golden Gate Bridge. The finisher’s medal also has this artwork. There was plenty of space near the start/finish area for runners doing the longer times to have tents with changes of clothes and shoes, food, and helpful friends/family.
For me, this was a, “What can I do,” if time is not a limiting factor. Between an injury, a pause in doing running events, and a bout of pneumonia, I had not done a 10K distance since spring 2024, nor a half marathon distance since February 2022. It took nearly the full 6 hours, but I did 13 laps. I’m happy with that and hope to improve in 2026. I will definitely consider doing this even again on December 31, 2026 if the event is done in San Jose.

This year my best friend and my run buddy decided we would try something new on New Years Eve. We signed up to do a 6 hr endurance run. There are several options you can run 24hr, 12hr or 6hr. All starting at different times of the day. We picked 6:00pm to midnight thinking it was nice to run into the New Year and we could see some fireworks. We had a little trouble finding the event at first but circled around and found the driveway that took us to Crissy fields. This is a very low key event. We walked up and got our laminated bib and tracker. Slapped that thing right on our ankle. That was a first for me. Real bathrooms are close to the event and a few porta potties. The SF bridge looked spectacular at night. When it was time for us to run we made our way to the start. All of a sudden we noticed a small cluster of people starting to run. We asked the director “is it time “. Yep was his answer. LOWKEY!!!!! Off we went for our little over a mile loop. They had some pylons with a few fluorescent lights to show the way. We did bring headlamps and I felt they were needed throughout the race. You could change your direction and go clockwise or counterclockwise depending on what you feel like doing. So at times others would come with their bright bright headlamps at your eyes. Think of a car with highbeams. My eyes!!!!!!! They had one aid station that had plenty of fluids and eats. Loved our pull over Jacket that we revived. I think this race would be more fun if you had a big group of people go with you. At midnight they had a count down and served sparkling cider. You could see the fireworks off in the distance. Happy New Year !!
