There’s no better place to experience the Napa Valley than at the Napa Valley Silverado Half Marathon, 10K & 5K. This exciting road race starts and finishes at the Calistoga Beverage Company (865 Silverado Trail N), in the heart of Calistoga in the north end of scenic Napa Valley. The whole course is on Silverado Trail (a paved roadway) starting at the Calistoga Beverage Company to the various turnarounds for the 5K, the 10K and the Half Marathon. Run route retraces itself back along Silverado Trail (which will be closed to car traffic) and back to Calistoga. The course is flat and fast with only two minor hills. Post event festivities will take place in Calistoga. The entire route is surrounded by vineyards and wineries with great vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges including Mt. Saint Helena and the picturesque Palisades. The beautiful spring weather and wildflowers are a sure treat this time of year. This event is limited to 1000 participants so don’t wait too long to register!

This race happens mostly on Silverado Trail, part of the same road as the Napa Valley Marathon, and thusly suffers from some of the same drawbacks.
1) Wine country can get really hot, even in the morning, and the black top makes it worse because any direct sun is reflected back up at you.
2) The road is uncomfortably canted in a lot of places.
3) Not-so-gentle rollers. They might not be so bad if it weren’t for the canting, but with both, it can be tough on your legs after a while.
On the plus side, it’s a small race and was logistically well-run in my experience. As long as you’re not expecting fancy schwag (in 2013 we got a T-shirt and a very nice but small, more traditional medal) and know what you’re in for in terms of the course/weather, it can be a nice little local race.
