Have known of this one for a few years but the hills kept me away. Well I finally decided to take the challenge.
Small event, think there were about 100 participants total for all distances.
A 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon, & 50k are all offered. This year all were an out and back with the marathon and 50k making two trips.
I ran the half. Probably the hardest half I have run.
Start/finish is at the high school track.
Course is on two lane country roads. Little to no traffic but the few vehicles that passed did so with caution and all did the Texas wave.
Course is hilly and since it is an out and back you get it all twice.
Awesome views as the sun rises. A few deer here or there.
I am told that due to a flood this summer the course was rerouted and a larger longer climb was not included this year so it may return for future events.
Cup less race so bring your bottle or hydration vest of choice. The had one unmanned water/sports drink refill station as well as a manned station that offered hydration as well as various snack options.
A T-shirt was included at pickup. Finisher medal, hydration, and snacks at the finish. It also says you get a coupon for a free slice of pie from the famous Bluebonnet Cafe but they either don’t do that anymore, I missed it, or I left too soon.
This run does not offer all the hype of a large event but I enjoyed the challenging course, the comradery of the fellow participants, and the morning hill country views.

My performance was not what I expected and that is a tribute to how tough this course is set up. I typically run a 1:50 – 1:55 half and I was just happy to cross the finish line still running. The course is tough. It felt more like a trail run but on asphalt. Hilly and scenic. The Hill Country lives up to its name with this one. The weather was great and the race went off a little late but no big deal there. The water stops are placed at locations where you will hit them twice. While I did not earn an award – they were beautiful pieces of art. I hope that tradition continues and I will try to run faster next time to earn one. I would definitely run it again. I have three half marathons in Waco that are billed as the hilliest in Texas. I ran them faster than this one. I would put this ahead of the Waco halfs in terms of hilliness.
