This is a small town race with a wonderful vibe. I was traveling solo from California (working on the 50 state half challenge), and I felt right at home chatting with the locals. Everyone was incredibly friendly and personable at the start line. Especially appreciative of Christy who sent me a personal email to convince me to run this race (I had been debating between a few different races that weekend).
I’ve done many races and this race was the winner of all of them in terms of swag! The tshirts are awesome, the medals really cool, and there was a swag bag with a bunch of goodies (special shout out to the dental floss in the swag bag – I had forgotten to pack dental floss on my trip, so this was a lifesaver!). I also got a really cool first place women’s half medal, which I have already put up on my bookcase and shown off to all my friends. 🙂
The race itself is tough but fun. You’re on road the entire time, and there are some challenging rolling hills. We were lucky with great weather – it was brisk and not windy, which made for perfect race conditions. I appreciated the support along the way from volunteers. The finish was great as well, with tons of food and drinks.
Thank you to Christy, the Flatwoods Missionary Baptist Church, and all the volunteers who made this race so much fun. I’ll forever remember my Arkansas race as one of my favorite state races!
Don’t let the Ozark mountains scare you!

This is a great small race. I think it is a terrific option for 50 staters who want to do something unique and are looking for an early spring option. The course is one grand loop from Mtn View Arkansas, on two lane highways, bordering the Sylamore national forest, and across a swinging bridge. Blooming dogwoods, deer, and turkeys are all in play. Crowds, cities, and a big expo are not. The medals are big and awesome, just like the mountains. Also- they share free pictures of the runners taken on the course.
