Fun small town race. Well organized, great medal especially if you are over the age of 50 (picture of Andy and Barney). Swag was decent with a nice shirt, some random goodies in the packet and snacks with bagels at the finish line.
The race course started downhill to the town’s greenway then a flat, picturesque out and back. You did not have to run back up the hill at the finish. Showers were available for runners at a nearby community center. The race made for a nice weekend to poke around main street shops and see/do everything The Andy Griffith Show.

Great Race in Beautiful Small Town America. This year was the largest participation for the overall event. The shirts and medals were nice (would be nice to have gender specific shirts). My small shirt swallows me. The only suggestion that I would have is more pacers. Plenty of food and drinks afterwards. There were only pacers from 1:50 to 2:10 times. Slower runners can also benefit greatly from a pacer. Although, I did get a PR, I could have ran smoother and probably finished better if there had been a pacer for my range. They need to add more pacers for the paces. I could only give a 4 for over all because I think that is a major miss.

Loved this race…They changed the course so that most of the race is along the Greenway. Therefore, it’s pretty flat! It starts out in picturesque downtown Mt. Airy, goes down hill to Riverside Park, then starts on a long out-and-back along the Greenway, finishing at Riverside Park. Course support was great (including port-a-potties near each aid station); registration at the Emporium was inside, with plenty of room so that you didn’t have to stay out in the elements pre-race (it was in the upper 30s at the start, 50s at the finish of the half). Since the start and finish were about a mile apart, they offered a school bus shuttle between the two. Local businesses helped out quite a bit, including free coffee and doughnuts at a local running/fitness store for spectators, and a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich for all runners (5K, 10K, or Half). This year was a record number of total runners (591), so it is a nice fairly small race, about the right size for this beautiful town of 10000. And when you’re in ‘Mayberry’, you just HAVE to visit the Andy Griffith Museum, Floyd’s Barber Shop, and Snappy Lunch. The medal wasn’t all that big, but it was distinctive and matched the tech long-sleeve shirts. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this race, and my weekend in Mt. Airy!
