The friendly folks in Madison, Mississippi host a nice race in a quaint small town. The race offers three distances: 5K, 10k, Half Marathon. I ran the half to get the state of Mississippi marked off, en route to my running in all 50 states. The course is great (a few rolling hills, but nothing terrible), the water stations were full of friendly volunteers, and the race swag was nice (hat, bag, shirt, decent medal). This race is also the RRCA Championship event, so there are awards for all the normal categories including Masters, Grandmasters, and age group finishers through 3rd place. The town holds a nice finishing area party with a band and southern food (rice and beans). The small number of porta-potties available at the start and along the course may be an issue for some. I enjoyed the peaceful setting and friendly people. It was a good race in Madison.

Small race, but LOVELY! First 8.5 are super FAST except for the Madison Parkway Bridge/Hoy Rd. between mile 2 and 3, which is a decent incline. Between mile 8 and 10.5 the course is on wooded, paved trails along the Natchez Trace Parkway. This section was a little hillier than I expected, but the shade and scenery was helpful! Miles 11-13 were also surprisingly hilly, but pretty doable! Very cute long sleeved t-shirt, medal, bag and koozie. Not a ton of swag, but I don’t keep much of the “swag” most races claim as perks ( i.e. sponsor samples and stuff). After party was fun/small – good band and free food ( even for family members). Jambalaya w/ rice, hotdogs , drinks, & chips. And of COURSE, the obligatory granola bar and banana!!
PLENTY of parking at the finish line too! I hope folks will consider this race to complete Mississippi. I know that The Mississippi Blues 1/2 and full (Jackson, MS) are popular, as is Biloxi, MS. Madison, MS is a great community – give it a try!!

The Madison Station Half Marathon was a great, local race! The route was challenging, with rolling hills throughout, and while there isn’t much scenery in Mississippi, there was lots of long stretches along the Natchez Trace and Historic Downtown Madison. Crowd support along the route was low, but there was a nice after party that made up for it!
