I have run the Mackinac Island Trio, consisting of the Lilac Festival, 6-miler, and Great Turtle Half Marathon, for years. Last year, I decided to run the Fort2Fort 5 miler and it quickly became one of my favorite races. The race starts and Fort Mackinac, runs along Huron Road to Fort Holmes, and then finishes back at Fort Mackinac.
The views from Huron Road and Fort Holmes are incredible, especially on blue sky days, which is what it was when I ran. There are some rolling hills on Huron Road and a decent climb to Fort Holmes, but not too bad. There is also a decent climb to the start at Fort Mackinac, which makes for a nice warm-up.
The race is very well organized and the course is well-marked. You can stay on the Island the night before or the mainland. I stay on the mainland and take the first ferry over which gives me plenty of time to get to the start line, get my packet, and warm-up before the race. This race is a must-run for anyone who likes Mackinac Island and Northern Michigan!
