This run has two great things going for it – A great festive atmosphere and a chance to run inside one of the Tustin Hangers – Structures built during WW2 to house Zeppelins and aircraft. Someday “progress” will knock down the hangers and they will be gone.
I was born on St. Patrick’s Day so this run has become a yearly tradition and I have had the pleasure to talk with the folks who put it on and they are fine people.
The run takes place at The District at Tustin Legacy (fancy name) and there is ample parking very close by. According to my Race Wire results there were 1389 timed runners so it is not too crowded. It is stroller and Dog friendly. The run began on time at 8am and the majority of the path is a very wide roadway with plenty of space for everyone. When you leave the roadway after mile one you run on a gravel path that leads to the entrance of the massive hanger. You run the length of the hanger and you turn and run run the length to exit. Upon exiting you are running on gravel again (a little hard but not impossible for the stroller folk). After that you are on the roadway again until the finish. The medal is pretty awesome.
This is my fourth year running (I missed the first year) and the post race expo has evolved. My first year the vendors and the stage for awards and entertainment were in the parking lot. Many of us then carried on the party into The District at the Auld Dubliner. Over the last few years the festivities began shifting into the entrance of the District with the addition of a Beer Garden next to a stage.
This year the expo is entirely in The District and The Auld Dubliner is now officially part of the festivities – Your bib contains a Drink Ticket to use at the Dubliner itself. The stage was now placed the complete opposite side of the Dubliner so a great many went straight to the bar and missed out on the Festivities. It would be great if they could put the stage back where they had it the past 2 years – in the middle by the fountain which would make it much closer to the Dubliner and where the people are at.
There are awards and a costume contest for people and dogs.
I actually run as the Green Elvis each year.
