Found this race very serendipitously only a week or so before. Had no idea Ohio had islands, and I’m glad I do now! Kelley’s island is absolutely adorable, perfect sunny fall day. This is the smallest race I’ve ever participated in, which was kind of nice seeing as you got to spend time meeting more people. The course was beautiful but difficult for me coming from sea level, it felt like one gradual incline. I walked a ton. Still would recommend it! You take a 20 min ferry to get there on race morning and “packet pickup” – no bibs for this race, but included long sleeve shirt and a drawstring bag. Great options for age group award winners! Really beautiful island, and also loved exploring Lakeside and Marblehead. Great unexpected way to check off Ohio!

This half marathon takes place in mid-November which, in Ohio, can be a mixed weather bag. Also, there are not a whole lot of visitors on the island at that time of year so you do not get any crowd support. That said, it is a scenic and fairly easy course to run. Course congestion is not an issue since it is a small event. The islanders are very welcoming and were able to pull off the race without a hitch. After the race there was quite a bit of food for the runners and race volunteers. If you wish to have a post race beer you can head around the corner to the Village Pump for that or one of their signature brandy alexanders. It is an easy 30-minute ferry ride from Marblehead, Ohio.
