I liked that there were a lot of runners because I made several friends along the way, which helps the miles go quicker. The first mile was pretty flat, but then you hit a long, gradual ascent that lasted about a mile.
It was a mix of wide dirt trails and single track. The single track was challenging at times because it was an out-and-back, and on the way back, sometimes you had to stop and get out of the way so runners going in the opposite direction could get by you. The aid stations were well placed along the course, and the volunteers were awesome. The stations were well-stocked with a good selection of food and plenty of hydration. There were some challenging ascents, but nothing I couldn’t handle. I just put my head down and kept moving forward. The last few miles were pretty flat, and there was a nice mile downhill toward the end, which made for a fast finish. Luckily, we had a cool, overcast morning, and the sun didn’t come out till around noon. But I heard it was very warm weather the previous year.
The views were beautiful, and I would definitely recommend this race to both beginners and experienced ultra racers.
The race shirt is really nice. I was a little bummed they gave out a mug at the end instead of a medal. I have a wall hanger at home with all my race medals on it, so I always like adding a medal to my wall.
I appreciated that it was for a good cause (cancer foundation), and all the volunteers I met were very encouraging and helped me get through some tough moments.
