First, this race is on a military installation and you must have a valid DOD ID card or have someone with a valid DOD ID card to sign you onto the base.
This race takes place on JBSA Randolph (formerly know as Randolph Air Force Base). I have seen this run advertised in previous years and as retired military, I like to run any military backed event.
Cost – this run was very budget friendly, it was only $30 plus a processing fee, very cheap for a half marathon.
Packet pickup was at the base gym or race morning at the event. Pretty Spartan as far as swag, reminds me of the old days when we ran for just a t-shirt, ah memories. You get a draw string backpack, a short sleeved shirt, and your bib.
Race morning – there were about 430 runners for this event. As previously stated it takes place on Randolph Air Force Base. The pre race was pretty low key, pretty much just a ready set go. The course itself was one of the flattest courses I have ever run and all on the base. As far as scenery, pretty much just buildings, a pond or two, runways, ramps, and base housing. The course was flat but we were treated to a pretty good wind so sometimes it was helping you and other times you were fighting it. The finish line was the same spot as the start. Pretty low key. They handed out finisher medals and a trophy if you were first in your division as you crossed. No trophy was provided for second or third place. On course support was great. I believe there was water and Gatorade every two miles. Not much on the way of spectator support as this was on a base so access is limited and it was also a smaller event. Finish line – they had brauts, beer, water, and Gatorade. It was a good little event for what you paid. If you are looking for a fast flat course, a budget friendly price, and a low frills event, this is a good one.
